During the time of Pentecost the disciples were at the crossroads of the world where there were people of every tongue. The disciples stood up and spoke in their own language but the hearers were able to understand as though they were speaking their language. That is speaking in tongues.
The way they get the babble going in some churches is by starting out with rock and roll Christian music. Then the people get emotionally worked up like at a regular rock concert and it is a mass hysteria. Usually there is a leader that can talk them up. I believe the educational level is not very high and the Biblical knowledge and history is lacking.
My Son had a dream when he was 17 that he was in his Grandfather's dark and scary basement. There was a bamboo wall with people peeking through and trying to get him. He could not understand their language and every step he took the wall of people followed. Finally he made it to the bottom of the stairs and felt relief. He looked up, the door swung open, and a dove was at the top of the stairs. A light shown down on him and he could understand what the people were saying. After that he could understand languages so easily and speaks 7 languages and perfect Mandarin. He has a longing in his heart to be a blessing in some way to the Asian community. THAT to me is speaking in tongues. Mmm

Speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit, BUT IT IS NOT THE ONLY GIFT!!! So do not get caught thinking that you have to speak in tongues to be saved.
Other gifts include DISCERNMENT, WISDOM, LEADERSHIP, TEACHING, HOSPITALITY, HEALING, PROPHECY, DREAM INTERPRETATION, and several other things.
Usually, when people speak in tongues, they are praising God because they are full of the Spirit, but what comes out of there mouth can be another language entirely which they are not familiar with (like the tongues of angels) or it can actually be a language that someone nearby understands and the message is for them, specifically, but the speaker usually does not know that.
Speaking in tongues sounds special, and it is, but REMEMBER: GOD MADE YOU THE THE WAY HE WANTED YOU! You use the gifts you have, not the ones you wish you had to minister effectively to God.
But God can give you Speaking in Tongues anytime He pleases.

the tongues at pentecost in the new testament were not unknown tongues. That is the guide to real gift of tongues. Babble is what was going on in Corinth and causing so much division like it still does today.
Every person I have ever met who made the claim they could speak in tongues always had this "I;ve got something you don't have" air about them and then they try to convince you that you don't have the 'spirit' if you don't speak in tongues.(not biblical at all)
Just more immaturity.

This will sound very mean, but it’s the truth. Modern talking in tongues is pure BS. The title of that book is very appropriate -- "Idiots guide".
The purpose of talking in tongues in Scripture was to make people UNDERSTAND. Remember the story? Everyone, regardless of their native tongue, understood the Apostles -- all at the same time!
Contrarily, modern talking in tongues results in some attention-seeking moron spewing a whole load of jibberish that no one understands -- except some charlatan churchman claiming to understand the “Holy Spirit’s” message.
Modern talking in tongues is merely an attempt at self-aggrandizement and importance by individuals who would like others to believe that they were given messages from the Holy Spirit, and legitimacy by cults who want people to believe that the Holy Spirit sends messages to its followers.
Talking in tongues was used to make everyone understand simultaneously (sort of like the confusion of languages/tower of Babel incident in reverse); what passes for talking in tongues today is nothing of the sort.

through experience, you cannot acquire this from a book for this is a "gift" and it's free. once you were prayed over and the Holy Spirit within you was refereshed, you will feel that surge of power and you will start speaking in tongues and you can't stop crying for you are filled with unexplainable joy that only God can give. ask your community to lay hands on you and pray for you... this is the start. God bless...

If you spent your whole life going to a church were people worked themselves into such emotional frenzies that they startled babbling nonsense syllables, soon you would want to babble nonsense syllables yourself. Delusion can be a wonderful thing.
