They could easily just by selling OSX on its own to run on PC platforms at a reasonable price.
I am a PC fan but when you compare Vista to OSX, theres no competition, OSX wins on looks, feel, plus it came from a good development background, once OSX are sold on its own to PC platforms, I would imagine in 2-3 years time, it could over take Windows, especially when those arrogant Microsoft bosses will just cut off sales of XP next January, forcing everyone on Vista.

Actually with the new macs using Intel CPUS, Macs are able to actually run windows as well as the Mac OS. I think they just might gain some ground on the Windows market share. Yes they are a bit more expensive but you are sort of getting 2 computers for the price of one.

The biggest barrier is price - you have to buy Mac hardware to run Mac OS. Considering the amount of software piracy going on, I can't see Apple ever changing that business model. At this point Macs just aren't competitive when it comes to cost, and I think that's the biggest thing holding them back. They do have the Mac mini as an entry level machine, but I think they could make a killing if they expanded their hardware line and had some other affordable offerings.

To be honest, I DO NOT think (even with the funny commercials) that the Mac OS will over take Windows... In the horizon If I were Microsoft, I would keep en eye out for Linux (Mainly Ubuntu). Even Dell has cought the linux craze
