I have two female cats that are both approximately 2.5-3 years old. They both go into heat almost twice a month, and I'm wondering if it is too late to get them spayed? Are there health risks having the surgery done when they aren't kittens?

Also, does anyone have any idea how to find a low-cost place to do this surgery? Does anyone have any ballpark figures?

Thanks.

It is never to late to spay a fertile female animal. Your cats are still young enough to have the proceedure with no more than the fluke possibility of a problem. (pre-existing, unknown conditions, etc.) Their current age is not a factor in the safety of the proceedure at this time, provided they are in good health.

I have known some Humane Societies across the US that offer a discount for spay and neuter proceedures if you ask them and if you qualify financially. The Humane Society does not want to see your cats at their shelter if they can do something to help you keep them. Not all of them offer this service, but it can't hurt to ask.

Some major pet store chains also have connections with DVMs that may be able to work with you on cost or perhaps a reasonable payment plan. It never hurts to ask.

Spend the day calling Vet clinics, pet stores and shelters in your area. If they care about animals then they will try to help you.

It certainly isn't too late. Your cats are still young.

There are no extra risks with having the surgery done later - other than the fact you have missed your chance to prevent them getting mammary cancer. If anything, an older and bigger cat will be able to cope with the anaesthetic better than a kitten.

Age in itself does not make for a riskier anaesthetic - only the health problems that usually go with age, and these can be allowed for. Not relevant to your cats, who are not old!

As far as price, we'd need to know what country and area you come from. I'm in England, where £40-£50 is a good price to pay for a cat spay. We also have The Cats Protection that will usually contribute half the price of a cat neuter op. I'm sure there are similar organisations in America if that's where you are.

It's never too late to have your cat spayed. Keep in mind that spaying later in life decreases the benefit of the spay in regards to reducing cancer risk and behavioral issues.

Unfortunately, spaying adult cats who have had many cycles involves controlling highly developed and enlarged blood vessels, and it is a more complicated and lengthy surgery, therefor finding a 'cheap' spay is unlikely. And if you DO find a cheap spay somewhere, your cat will suffer the poor procedure with pain, and possible mishap because of the corners they cut.

I advise having your cats spayed with their regular veterinarian, and to have the surgery done properly, whatever the cost.

Its never too late to get them fixed. Some Vet surgeries will charge more for cat desexing, if they are not kittens, but ring around. Checking on desexing costs myself found that there can be $40 - $60 difference between Vets. Also if your on a pension, some will give you a discount. Some Animal Humane Societies do desexing at a discount too.

I had a cat spayed at five years old. The Humane Society is the place to go, we had two ferral cats spayed and shots given for $50. They will work with you on the price, they have put my pets to sleep for no charge when I was broke.

Cat's can be spayed at any age. I do not know of any low cost places but would like to find one myself. I have a female cat as well and my vet wants $85.

it never to late to have a dog or cat spayed but it usually better for them when they are younger, but be sure that you don't let ur cats go out when they are in heat, because later you don't want to have a litter kittens and also there are going to be some places near ur town where they do this producer for free or nearly free, look up low-cost vet

It's almost never too late to have your cats spayed. I'm glad you're considering it.

Females run anywhere between $75 and $200ish. (I've checked in Northern Virginia, Tennessee, and Central Illinois.) Many humane societies, shelters, and rescue groups offer discounted rates. If you are lucky, you can get it done for $60 to $90 each with their discount.

Good luck.

If you have a low income and qualify for free spaying/neutering, then they will do it for free. Contact your county's Animal Care and Control office and make an appt. In the Miami area, it costs about $120 per animal at the vet's office.

They're still young and will recover from a spay perfectly fine. Don't worry about that. Thank you for getting them spayed!

You can contact local humane societies/SPCAs, and even some smaller rescues, to see if they provide low-cost spaying. Most do.
