We bought a house and the master suite faces the patio. I want to put a sliding door in it, since our very old dog sleeps in this room and forever needs to go out in the middle of the night. He has to walk down a hallway, past the dining room, through the kitchen and the family room to go out the only door to the back yard. He falls a lot!

And if I did not want it exactly where the window is would this be more?

Thanks!

Yea , there are alot of variables is it a block wall or wood framed? If its wood framed you'll need to build a header wich will create drywall and exterior damage. If its block its harder to cut and more time consuming still drywall work and exterior damage. I've done 3 of these in block walls and is alot of work all the way down to tenting the work area to keep dust out of the house. Probablt 1700.00 labor and 800.00 for doors and misc.

French Door Cost

A good quality 6' x 7' door, like one from Pella would cost about $1500 just for the door. Enlarging an opening depends on several factors. If it is a load-bearing wall, temporary shoring and bracing will have to be installed. If the siding is brick it will be difficult to cut an opening without damaging the brick veneer. Maybe $3,000 for the whole job.

Probably the window is not large enough to accomodate the door. Therefore the cost will be the same as if there were no window at all.

Now, If the door happens to fit the area that the window now occupies, or is slightly smaller, then the cost will be exactly, no more and no less, slightly less than the above stated costs.

God Bless
Sorry about your dog.

I just put one in almost the same situation. The french double doors were 1200.00 ,hardware- 45.00, flashing and trim- 90.00.All tax incl.Got a carpenter to do it on the side on a Saturday for 28.00hr x 13hrs he also had to cut though the foundation. So your probably looking at around 2600.00 to 2800.00 (can $) It won't cost more to cut the hole as long as you incorporate the window hole with the door hole otherwise you will half to pay for some patch work.Cutting a hole for a door only takes 10min with a good saw.
