The point of weapon technology is simply to build more effective tools with which to kill your enemies. Unfortunately, at this point in mans development war is inevitable and as long as there is war the search for better weapons will continue. On the bright side (if there is one) most of mans greatest inventions (or major advancements in) can be traced back to discoveries made in the search and development of weapons.

To keep a technological edge over the enemy.
To accurately kill only those who need killing.
To deter the enemy from attacking by demonstrating superior fire power and lethality .
So we can have cool spin off technology like microwave ovens, CD/DVD players and the internet.....

It is to make money for defense contractors. Or possibly bankrupt your opponents, if they insist on tying to keep up with you in an arms race..
