The reason cats have these bald patches is to give the impression the other animals they are awake when infact they may be sleeping. The patch looks brighter than the rest of the body therefore looks like an open eye.
Maybe not to us though.
Only really needed by wild cats to protect themselves being attacked by other animals.

A cat has very sensitive whiskers. Nature has made cats heads to fit in small places while being able to sense it's prey. Hair around the face, eyes, and ears can interfere with the cats ability to sense with it's whiskers.
Whiskers being the most sensitive of hairs can receive cross signals from other hair touching it. This is why nature designed cats with this almost bald area on the face and between the ears.

ha ha do you know what, Im so pleased you asked this. Iv got 2 kittens and they both have this, I thought I was doing something wrong in their diet!!!
I assumed as they both had it, it was something natural, so now i know it is, so thank you!!!

I have a Cornish Rex...and he too has a bald spot there.
