Doesn't that imply that there ISN'T an afterlife?

Okay then. What if one went to Hell and the other Heaven? Would the person in Heaven be truly happy knowing the beloved partner is in Hell?

I am only concerned with what happens here on earth and will let heaven and hell remain in the unknown category.

No. That is something that is said in a marriage ceremony, no where in the bible can you find it as something that is supposed to be said when you're getting married. The bible does tell us if a spouse dies, the other spouse is free to marry again. The bible also says when we are in heaven, the former things will not be remembered. Since everyone has a choice who they say Jesus is, you're right, one person could be saved and another lost for all of eternity.

Someone asked Jesus about marriage in heaven. Jesus said, in heaven we will be like the angels. That is, there will be no marriage in heaven. So people who are married on this earth, will not be married eternally.

Mormons really, really got this one mixed up!

Umm...well, sure. But, then, God didn't write that.

See, at my sister's wedding, they did not say that, they said "For All Eternity" because if you are truly in love with someone, it wouldn't be heaven without them.

Perhaps the person who first did the "til death do us part" thing, assumed that heaven is not a large place where many people can go after death, but more a state of mind...heaven on an individual basis sort of thing.

It depends on your beliefs. Christain/Atheist...whatever. We all believe different things. If you believe in an afterlife, just take that part out of the vows.

Well, the meek and the righteous will inherate the earth. Matthew 5:5, Psalms 37.
Till death do us part is true. You are to be married to the same person for the rest of your lives. The only way you can get a divorce, or remarry, if you want to, is if one of the spouses commits adultery, or dies. If your spouse dies, and if you do not get remarried, and if your spouse is ressurrected, you can resume your being together. But once your spouse dies, you are no longer married to that person. You are free to remarry if you want to. But, if you do remarry, you will be with that person when the ressurrection takes place. I hope this makes since to you, I tried to explain it in the best way that I could. Its better to talk to someone in person about this so you won't leave out details.

Married people rarely die at the same time, so death will part them.
I wonder myself if you are married after one party dies, which is allowed everywhere, who you would spend eternity with.
In civil ceremonies, you don't always hear the part about 'what God has joined together let no man rend asunder', so I'm ready to understand that there is a married afterlife. Which would have been easier to understand when people didn't live so long or marry so often.

not necessarily...it implies that no matter what happens, you will not separate. For you were joined in the presense of God and you shall never be parted.

You see, in the afterlife, we have somebody else that we are together with. if we are married in the actual world, it doesn't mean that we are married even in our afterlfie.

That phrase is part of a vow normally exchanged when a man and woman pledge their earthly lives to each other. Ideally, a Christian should not marry a non-Christian. The parting is only temporary if both are believers.

No. It has to do with where Jesus says in Heaven people will be like the angels where no one is married or given in marriage.

Marriage is only for our earthly pilgrimage.

Nope, it implies that the civil union that most marriages provide do not have any binding power after the end of this mortal life.

There ARE some marriages that are sealed for time and eternity. That seems a better choice IMO.

Jesus said " it is not like that in Heaven, You are neither given or taken in marriage".
