You can buy them at any subway station, including when you exit the AirTrain.

You actually can't purchase them from the vending machines at the AirTrain exit. You need to buy a $5 pay-per-ride card and then exit to the street. Then enter the subway station at either Howard Beach or Sutphin/Archer (Jamaica). You can buy an unlimited metrocard in the lobby to the subway station.
