In one of the ancient texts, it is recorded that Satan and the
Serpent were NOT the same individual. According to this
text, there were two Serpents who were the Guardians of
Eden. The two Serpents were both four-legged lizard-like
creatures (note that there are actually "four-legged snakes"
in the serpent-family today).
Satan the Luminous One desired to enter the Eden but, was
held at bay by the two Serpents. It was known that, Satan
is a Master of Tricks and Lies; thus, one of the Serpents
were tricked by Satan in helping Satan etering Eden.
This Serpent carried Satan in its belly, and then Satan spoke
to Eve by resonating from the Serpent's mouth (this can
either mean that the Serpent was gigantic or, Satan entered
the Serpent as an incorporeal spirit like a possession).
After the Biblical Event, the Serpent that helped Satan was
cursed to move on its belly whilst the other one remained
four-legged (hence, we have the two types of snakes today).
The "four-legged lizard-like" snakes are actually being held
as sacred guardians by many ancient cultures.

This passage contextually uses the terms interchangeably.
It will help to read the whole chapter, but here are 3 of the verses with the key words.
2Co 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ....13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
John identifies the deceiver as the serpent and Satan:
Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Revelation 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

I'm no expert but it is my supposition that the animals could all talk back then. Eve did not seem to be at all surprised that the snake spoke.
Satan is "the dragon" and "the serpent," both titles linking him to his role in the fall of man. He appeared to Eve in the form of a serpent, doubtless in the body of a serpent he had possessed. It is unlikely that a being so pretentious as the devil would choose as his mouthpiece an ordinary snake. Indeed, "serpent" can refer to any reptile. The reptile he deemed a suitable embodiment of himself was "the dragon," an ancient name for the sort of creatures we know as dinosaurs.

Just like human beings, God created angels with free will. One of the angels rebelled and became Satan (which means adversary). This fallen angel somehow used a snake to tempt Eve into eating the apple.

The scriptures do indeed teach that it was Satan:
Moses 4: 5-8, 10, 19-20
5 And now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which I, the Lord God, had made.
6 And Satan put it into the heart of the serpent, (for he had drawn away many after him,) and he sought also to beguile Eve, for he knew not the emind of God, wherefore he sought to destroy the world.
7 And he said unto the woman: Yea, hath God said—Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (And he spake by the mouth of the serpent.)
8 And the woman said unto the serpent: We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden;
• • •
10 And the serpent said unto the awoman: Ye shall not surely die;
• • •
19 And I, the Lord God, said unto the woman: What is this thing which thou hast done? And the woman said: The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
20 And I, the Lord God, said unto the serpent: Because thou hast done this thou shalt be acursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life;

G-d created Lucifer -- who was a worship leader angel in heaven. (Isaiah). The adversary-- the devil-- Satan-- all name the same being. He became proud and deluded and tried to take over heaven in a coup. He took 1/3 of the angels down with him and they became demons. He wanted to hurt G-d anyway he could-- so he decided to mar and to destroy what G-d loved most-- people made in His image.
The snake was a vehicle Satan used to entice Eve and Adam to distrust what G-d says.
Today the Adversary does not usually use talking snakes. But he still tries to tear up people's faith/ trust by saying, "Did G-d really say (what the Bible says)?" and "Nothing will happen to you if you ignore what He says and choose your own way."

He basicly called God a liar and told them they could be like God and they began to ponder this lie and then they sinned. But God said you eat u die and satan lied and said they would not die. Yes. It was one of the creatures that came forth out of the earth when the Word of God commanded.
Genesis 3
The Temptation and Fall of Man
1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

The talking snake is Lucifer (or Satan) created by God as an angel. However, just as humans (through pride) choose to rebel against God, so did Satan and some of the other angels. Now they wander through the world as enemies of God and of human beings who they try to destroy by fooling them into rejecting God and the gift of eternal life in God's presence, which God desires for them.
