Williamsburg and Bedford are very trendy and nice but somewhat expensive but you might be able to find a good deal in those areas. Another area that is up and coming is Bushwick, once not so great now lofts are popping up. Might look at areas of Queens that are on the border of Brooklyn like Ridgewood. Safe, pretty clean and relatively inexpensive. Check out www.craigslist.org to check out rental in housing. You might even find a roommate!

I would say that most neighborhoods in Brooklyn are still "relatively" affordable, compared to Manhattan. Some safe and interesting (read: somewhat gentrified) neighborhoods: Cobble Hill, Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope. However, an important consideration is your commute. Pick someplace with easy access to Maimonides by subway.

Ocean Parkway has fairly inexpensive co-ops for NYC prices. It's a nice area of Brooklyn and Ocean Parkway goes through nice neighborhoods in Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, Park Slope and Flatbush.

Maimonides is on the N and D subway train lines. The neighborhood of Sunset Park is served by both those lines, is fairly inexpensive, and has some pretty brownstones and a park -- might work for you.

If you are going to work at Maimonides, try Boro Park. It a Hassidic community. It's somewhat safe but it's definitely not exciting.

I'm a cop in NY and I know an anestesiologist that works there and lives in my building. Check with 555 prospect. There are actually 5 buildings in the complex, but there decent places for ok rents.
