Like all theology it would depend on the religion. So far as i know,only Islam holds to this belief as far as "pictures and statues" are concerned. Otherwise,to be an idol it would have to be worshipped and the view taken that a god actually inhabits the statue or bas relief.

If this was true then why did God give the design and measurements of the Ark of the Covenant that incorporated two Angels on the lid.

If you read the whole commandment, bowing and worship seems to be involved. Though, in a sense, idolatry can be anything we substitute for God.

i do not. in basic terms Jesus/God is worth of worship. images, statues, pendants, etc, are in basic terms mere symbols to assist remind us that Jesus died for my sins. they in basic terms grow to be an idol once you provide them power, once you commence to imagine you want to desire to that merchandise. so long because it continues to be no longer something more beneficial than a ornament, it isn't an idol.
