We are expecting a third baby and want to put our 3 yr old in the front passenger seat in a forward facing child seat. We would have to de-activate the front airbag. Does anyone know how we would go about this and if it is legal.

You can have a switch instaled an National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationd /www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ explains how to go about doing that. Here's the phone number if you just want to call 1-888-327-4236.

You only have to deactivate the airbag if the child's in a rear-facing seat as these place the child too close to the dashboard/airbag.

A child under 12 may ride in the front but must use an appropriate child restraint. If the child seat is forward facing then it's good practice to move the car's passenger seat back on its runners to increase the distance between the child and the dashboard/airbag but the airbag may remain active.

It's not good practice to get the airbag disconnected or otherwise permanently disabled as it will not then be available to protect other front seat passengers when required.

WELL I'M SURE YOUR TO DE-ACTIVATE YOUR AIRBAG THIS WOULD BE : OPEN YOUR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR, AGAINST THE GLOVE BOX ON THE SIDE WHERE THE DOOR COVERS IT WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED THERE SHOULD BE A KEY HOLD THERE JUST PUT IN YOU KEY AND TURN OFF THE AIRBAG THAT'S THE KEY THAT YOU USE FOR YOUR DOORS, IGNITION ETC. THAT'S HOW I USED TO DE-ACTIVATE MY VAUXHALL CALIBRA AND MY FIAT STILO BUT I'M NOT TO SURE IF THAT WILL HELP YOU, YES IT IS LEGAL PROVIDING THE CHILD IS IN A CAR SEAT BUT I'M NOT TO SURE YOU WOULD HAVE TO TURN YOUR AIRBAG OFF, ALTHOUGH I WOULD IF IT WAS MY CHILD THAT WAS GOING TO BE SAT THERE, BECAUSE PERSONALLY I DON'T LIKE AIRBAGS.

Some astras have a sensor that detects a Vauxhall child seat and does the job automatically. This is such a safety issue that you really need to consult a main dealer. Yes I know it will cost but it's so important to get this right.
