The word "rapture" doesn't appear in the Bible. The word comes from a Greek translation of the verses that describe the effect of being "caught up to meet Him in the midway air" using their word "rapare" which means to "snatch away or seize". It's not really all that new, but there are several verses in Daniel, Revelation and other places that describe it.

John Nelson Darby,a 19th century Irish lawyer turned Anglican preacher was the first to develop a full blown theology that incorporated the teaching that Jesus would return secretly and claim His true followers, leaving the rest behind to be ruled by an Anti-Christ figure for seven years, then Jesus would return a third time to destroy the Anti-Christ and save those who were converted during the seven year tribulation and finally establish His own Kingdom.
Cyrus Scofield a disciple of Darby later published a Bible which he incorporated Darby`s views on the rapture.
So we can easily see that the rapture is not true doctrine but the guesswork of Darby and later Scofield.

The concept of Christians being "raptured" or suddenly taken away from the world was first put forth in the 18th century. Before that there was pretty much a consensus among Christians (Catholic and the reformers) that the verse about being caught up to meet the Lord in the air referred to Jesus' second coming. It will not be a secret whisking away of believers but a glorious appearing of the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. Note the language: "caught up together...in the clouds." It's at least as old as the Bible.

It came from knowing that life will end. Look on the bright side, you still have yourself. Your souls travels on, perhaps to another body. Is it not reasonable to assume we will get another body, given that we were given this one? Reality makes it possible, and we are reluctant to accept, but we have it anyway. After death, what else would happen but to gain another body? Reasonable, of course we never know for sure about these things, because we might just opt to remain in constant stable motion with our Lord and Savior. In this way we can watch over all the bodies and provide them spiritual blessings. If God does not exist, we shall make him exist. Is this not the message of Love? Is this not what we shall shout throughout the universe? We have the opputunity to be the intelligent ones, and all we need is a message to shout out through the universe, that the human race is one with divinity, has and always will be, and now it is finally getting society to realize the simple truth that happiness is inside of you.

It started in 1830 by a crazy woman named Margaret Macdonald in Scothland.
Read "The incrediable cover-up" by Dave MacPherson
What to know what GOD thinks?
Eze 13:18 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the [women] that sew pillows to all armholes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you?
women is symbolic of Religion
They cover the "truth" with pillows and kerchiefs, which means with lies.
Eze 13:19 And will ye pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?
Eze 13:20 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly.
Eze 13:21 Your kerchiefs also will I tear, and deliver my people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

The concept was popularized in the 1830s, and more recently since the 1970s, by proponents of the premillenialism. (of which I am one)
