The only best spot is in the vital organs ie:heart, lungs!
Other area's offer to much risk in a wounded injured animal that may well die and not be recovered! No true hunter wants to lose an animal with a bad shot!
The brain shot will kill the deer instantly but a near miss may cause a slow death and a lost animal! (high skill shot)
The neck will cause instant death if taken completely out but a near miss again could be a slow death or crippled deer! (high risk skilled shot)
The liver will be a slower kill shot and should never be taken as the "kill" shot to down deer! (bad shot low or slow blood loss means usually tracking the deer)
The femoral artery is a high blood loss shot but low percentage kill shot because of the chance of near miss or even clotting causing lost or crippled game! (very high risk shot never to be taken)
Never risk a injured or lost animal to a risky shot placement aim for the vitals only! I took my first deer back in 1974 and I have never lost or injured one yet and I pray the day never comes. I practise shooting my bows or guns evey year and I sight in my weapons before every season no matter what!
Good luck!

I would shoot for the shoulder blade (behind shoulder)with a .308. This is a fairly big target and a broken shoulder blade will drop a deer. On the other hand, if you were shooting something very light (a .222 is legal in my state though I wouldn't use it on deer), I might try for the neck. You don't have to hit the spinal cord (major arteries, veins, and even the wind pipe might work) but it is a harder target. Shooting for the heart risks hitting the shoulder with a lot of loss of meat (though my father used to do it without loosing meat).

You need to try to shoot a deer in the heart/lung area. If you just aim 1/3 up the deer's body, right behind the shoulder, you will be in that area. As for the neck, spine, or brain shot, do not take these if you don't need to. I have seen deer shot in the neck and spine and fall right down, but this requires precision marksmanship, or you will just wound it and paralyze it. If you put a good heart/lung shot on a deer, it will not run far and be easy to track.

i prefer a head shot when in the range i can be confident about it. neck shots can be risky because if you don't hit bone the bullet will go right through and you will have to sit back and watch it run away then deal with the guilt over wounding and losing the animal. the best bet is behind the shoulder. even if you hit it high it will go down and it will leave a good blood trail to follow.
know your abilities and don't push it beyond that. hunting is a privilege not a right and respecting the animal you're hunting is the most important.

the neck this is a last resort though i have taken a deer down instantly with a neck shot. Be patient and Wait for a clean shot at the vitals though dont risk just wounding the animal.

Well, the only way to kill a deer is to hit a vital organ. Lungs, Heart, Brain, are all organs.

lung and heart. Front quarter just behind front leg, under the shoulder. Your ability to hit a vital organ is improved in that area.
Ethical hunters make sure that shot is well placed so as not to leave an animal injured and running.

I used to make something of a specialty of neck shots, but you have to be very careful, and pass a lot of shots, to do so ethically. Better to put a bullet in the "boiler room," and if you're worried about ruining too much meat, put down the silly magnum and get a better cartridge that doesn't push the bullet too fast.

Hmm. The heart, brain, lungs, eyes, skin, bones, muscles, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, spleen, nose, and ears are all organs. I would have to say hair. I don't think hair is an organ. Definitely hair. There's nothing more devastating than getting shot in the hair-do.

By organs i think you mean heart and lungs. go for the head or spine. A spine shot will break it, causing paralization and will drop it where its standing It might not kill it either and might need anotehr bullet, but its not likely. the head shot will drop it in its tracks.
