There are no benefits when dropping atomic bombs. The radio activity is so painful that it will erase the earth and it's population on it for years to come. I hate to say it, but why use such weapons of mass destructions just to kill off the earth? It's insane if you ask me.

The Manhattan Plan was among the most expensive federal projects in United States history. The fact the bomb worked was a short and long term benefit.
The real short term benefit was it ended the war with Japan quickly.

The long term benefit one could say it prevented World War 3.

Benefits....now that is a strange choice of words.
Short term effects
mass devastation, crystallization of sand, radiation poisoning, extreme temperature increase, death
Long term
none. People before you go off on a tirade radiation poisoning if it doesn't kill you in the first 2-3 days is gone, and an atomic bomb vaporizes the radioactive material meaning in an hour the levels are back to normal.

short-term: we ended the war and saved 1000's of US casualties that would have resulted from a Japanese invasion. long-term: the cold war never escalated in to thermonuclear war because both sides saw the result of the bombs and came to the conclusion of mutually assured destruction. I personally believe the time has come to pull out of the middle east while relaying this message to terrorist groups: hit us and we start using low-yield nukes when we find your a*sess!!
