No way! The only reason I think your mother might have told you they do hurt is because (considering how old she is) back in the day, they didn't have novacaine. They just plopped you in the chair and put a drill through your tooth. My mother had that happen - and she had a cavity in every tooth!

The only thing that's painful (and I wouldn't even call it pain) is the needle. Take your two fingers and pinch the inside of your cheek a little. If you screamed or jerked away, then your a downright sissy and will not be able to handle a filling. If you didn't freak, then you'll be able to handle the needle. The needle doesn't take that long either. After that, they'll start working on your tooth.
Now, take your finger and push down on the top of your tooth. That's what the drill feels like. You'll be able to hear it too, which may scare you a bit, but that's okay.
After it's down, your face'll feel really big. Try punching yourself afterwards, you won't even feel it! (I'm just kidding.....but I'd try it anyways.)

I've had two fillings (on the same day too) and I wasfine afterwards. Have fun!

I just got fillings done 4 days ago. No it will not hurt. the dentist going to put some numbing gel on your gums. Next you will get an injection once the area is numb from the gel. You will then get the cavity removed from you teeth with a drill. once it is removed the dentist will fill you tooth. If its on your front teeth you might want to ask for white filling like I did. during the whole time you mouth will be numb where you got the injection at. I bit my dentist finger on accident because she had her finger in my mouth and she asked me a question and I could not feel her finger in my mouth. after its all over your mouth and lip will be numb still for a few hours. You should eat and brush you teeth before you go because you wont be able to eat again until numbness wares off. Also go get some Anbesol or oragel for when the numbness wares off because your teeth will be very sensitive after the filling is put in. It could take from a week to months for the sensitivity to go away my teeth are sensitive still on day 4 after mine.

I think you mean does it hurt to get a filling......once in, fillings do not hurt, tho your tooth can then be sensitive to hot or cold for a while. As for putting in a filling, it depends on how large or deep the cavity is as to whether or not it hurts. The dentist can give you medication to numb your mouth so you don't feel a thing.

Depends on how deep the cavity. In most cases, the drilling may make you a little uncomfortable, but doesn't hurt. For a deep filling, they give you a shot but they numb the gum before the shot and you hardly feel it.
