could be you got an edge where the potato was rotting before the manufacturer processed into fries.

Sometimes whatever oils they had just fried a previous batch in had gotten old, or burnt a little.
Many things could contribute to weird tastes.

It usually happens when the oil they were fried in was either burnt recently or is old and has leftover pieces of food in it that are burnt. Either way...might want to find a new restaurant.

Some restaurants like McDonalds have really really sucky fries anyway. But it is mostly because they use the same grease over and over.
