I'm full Croatian and my fiance is American. We are having a Croatian band at our wedding play, but half the guests will not know what the songs are! I'm debating hiring a DJ to play while the band are on breaks...do you think this is a good idea? I just feel a little tacky having a great band for MY friends and family to dance to, then a DJ for all the non-Croatians.

I guess I should have added that the Croatian band plays a few american songs, like the oldies "Brown Eyed Girl", "Shout" etc...but we will have a lot of younger people (25-30yrs old) and I know they would enjoy some fun dance music! :)

I think it's a great idea to have both, especially if the Croatian band is strictly that. A DJ will do much more for your American crowd than a mixed CD will, trust me! And the DJ should play more than just when the band is on breaks. They should alternate sets. If you go to long without entertaining either set of people, one set may leave. You may also find that your Croation family and friends, especially the younger ones really appreciate popular American dance music!

Is the band only playing croatian music or are they playing a variety? If only croatian i think it would be a good idea to switch on and off from the band to dj so everyone gets a chance to hear music they like. If the band is willing to play all types of music then it would be fine with just the band. Personally I don't know what Croatian music is but i know if I was at a reception and couldn't stand the music then that might affect me to want to leave early if it meant i wasn't having fun.

Maybe you can have the Croatian band play for while, then switch to the dj for the 2nd half of the reception. I've seen weddings that start off with a mariachi, and a dj takes over later.
Are you sure the Croatian band can't play any "american" music? Maybe they can alternate between the two styles, and everyone can dance to one band.

Did you consider maybe hiring a DJ and providing cds of Croatian music? That way, he can play a mix and you save money by not having to hire two entertainers. If you have already decided to go with the band and put a deposit down though, I would say just stick to them. Perhaps they can play a few contemporary American covers if you're that concerned about it. Otherwise, I think I would enjoy that if I were a guest because I would be exposed to music I'd never heard before. It will be a cultural learning experience. If anyone has the nerve to complain that the music is all Croatian, then they don't deserve to attend your wedding. Its a wonderful thing to want to honor your culture and expose those whose family you will be joining to the music of that culture as well. I think it would be unneccessary to hire two entertainers, though. Not necessarily tacky, just a bit much. Try to see if you can find a happy medium, and if not, screw anyone who doesn't like it. It isn't their wedding is it?

take it from a wedding co-ordinator,that a DJ is more than acceptable for a wedding not to mention the Croatian band is a bonus... it would turn into a semi circus if the thought of having 2 bands at your wedding reception. The guests will loose the most important thing to focus on...you!!

I don't think that's a bad idea. You probably don't even have to hire a separate DJ; if your Croatian band has all the right equipment, they should be able to pop in a mix CD and play it for you during the breaks. Have fun!

I have been coordinating weddings for 18 years now and this is a pretty standard question.
It is perfectly acceptable to have both a live band and a DJ there for the reception. This makes it easier on the band since they do not have to play the whole time and may wrk out to be a little cheaper if you get te right combination.

Hi and Congrats on the upcoming wedding! If you want contemporary music, you wouldn't need to hire a dj, just get someone to set up a music system and use burned cds - and some are using ipods for weddings as well.
Your lucky guests will have an awesome experience, and how great it is that you can share your heritage with them! I've been to a Rusyn wedding, and they played the great folksongs and traditional ones, slow and fast, as well as more contemporary ones.
Good luck and have fun!

Tacky? Heck no I think that's great! I'd love to come to your wedding! Having both is above and beyond the call of duty so to speak.. and I'll bet that if the band is decent the non-Croatians will be boogying to them too :)

It relies upon on your travelers. no count if it is 50 anniversary occasion and each and all the travelers like specific track from 60s or 70s, so getting the main spectacular band would be super. yet many times the crown on wedding ceremony is extremely diverse and DJ can do extra perfect artwork adjusting the track to the temper of your travelers. He can sense what track they like and play it.
