No one really knows what causes schizophrenia. It is not even a single disease but a spectrum of disorders. If any one knew why it develops in young people primarily they probably could tell you what causes it.

It is said to have genetic aspects (a genetic predisposition); it usually happens to people who are extremely stressed and/or suffer anxiety or depression. Medications (neuroleptic drugs) help but are not a "silver bullet." I think the fact that the symptoms draw attention to the individual experiencing them and that attention nowadays usually means you are committed or commit yourself to a hospital. That hospital environment means one gets more attention in the form of Tender Loving Care while on meds and in talk therapy and that counts more for recovery than drugs alone. Everyone has a need to be needed or valued.

If you want more info on the disorder type "Schizophrenia" into Yahoo! search and a number of informative links will come up.

Good luck, good health, peace and love!

I have no idea I am paranoid schizophrenic it occured after I had a nervous breakdown in Jan. 1977. It was the last semester of my Senior year of high school. I spent 5 months in the hospital and got out in June 1977 and got my high school diploma in Sept. 1977. I have been in hospitals 5 or 6 times and also a rehab center 3 times and have been married for 2 1/2 years to a schizophrenic man he was abusive and we divorced in Oct. 1996. We had no kids and I got a nice settlement 2 years after the divorce was final. I live by myself since July 1996 in a studio apt then in 2000 got HUD or Section 8 housing. live in a nice 1 bedroom apt.
