You can not serve the Lord and self at the same time. In order to understand the mark of the beast one has to understand the very nature of the beast. After speaking of His commandments, the Lord said "Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes." The same place that the mark of the beast is. Your forehead is where you take thought and your hands is where you take action. It was dealing with the law of God, and "sin is the transgression of the law" 1 Jn 3:4. Obviously, if we are dealing with something that will cause many to be lost it has to deal with sin, and sin is the transgression of the law. In order to know the mark, we have to know the beast. There is only one power that can claim all of the characteristics of the antichrist power in Daniel and Revelation. Space will not allow, so this will be but a summary. First of all it claims to be God, claiming to forgive sins and has persecuted God's people. It has come up out of the Roman empire taking up three nations with it and has "eyes" and a "mouth" as a man, or a man as its representative. In Bible prophecy, a day is a year (Eze 4:6), and this power is reported to have reigned "thousand two hundred [and] threescore days" (Rev 12:6) where God's people had to hide from her. This amounts to 1260 years of reign. This power also thought to change times and laws (Rev 12, 13, 17 and Dan 7, 8 tells about this antichrist power). Only one power can fit all of this description and ever will, that is the Roman Catholic Papacy. Over a millenium of persecuting and martyring God's people, killing from 50 to 100 million total. Reigning from 538 A.D. to 1798 A.D.; from taking down the three nations taking total control to Napolean taking captive the pope. She claims to be God on earth and to have the power to forgive sins which God alone has. She has thought to change the law of God, totally destroying the second commandment concerning image worship (for we know that she still holds this abomination today) and has divided the last commandment and changed the fourth commandment, the sabbath commandment. Her claims of authority come from so successfully changing the sabbath commandment from the seventh day to the first day of the week. This commandment commands us to rest upon the seventh day, which was established at Creation. The whole world has wondered after her. The test will come to all who are alive, that no man may buy or sell just as the sunday blue laws of Justinian. Any one who will cling to Jesus and obey Him rather than the papacy will thereby incur persecution.
