My son is 19 months old, he doesn't mention anything about being wet when he is wet, but he tries taking his diaper off as soon as he goes tot he bathroom. i kinow in the books they say not until he can pull his pants up and down, he doesn't pull his pants up after pulling them down. I was just curious if he was ready? Any ideas or a way to help him with it?

What a fun time for you!

If your son is fairly verbal I would suggest to you that you point out to him your observation that he does not appear to like to be wet. Let him know that when he is "bigger" he will want to use the potty like mommy and daddy and get rid of his diapers. I would focus on saying something like "When you are older you will be ready to use the potty like big boys do"

Under NO circumstances should you force, scold or bully him into using the toilet! Gentle encouragement worked really well with my children. And, of course, praise him when he finally does use the toilet. He is old enough to pull his pants up and down, however pulling "up" does take them some practice!

Children potty train much better when they themselves do the training!

Good Luck!

19 months is pretty young to potty train but if you can train him go for it. If it doesn't happen right away don't be discouraged. Basically when he goes into the bathroom and starts to pull of his diaper help him and then position him over the toilet or over a mini toilet and see if he goes. Wait about 15 seconds. The important thing is the feedback. If he goes make a really big deal about it and praise him. If he doesn't go, give words of encourangement, like "good try, maybe next time." Eventually he will get the understanding that pee goes in the toilet and I get praise when I do it. The pulling off of the diaper could just be he doesn't like diapers as many babies don't or diaper rash.

One thing you can do is buy cloth training pants, with vinyl covers. That way he can feel the wetness, but I still think 19 months is still a little too young. Wait until he's about 22-24 months before starting.

We got our daughter a potty chair and had her sit on it with books. She wasn't day time potty trained until 3, but she got the idea and would sometimes pee in it before she hit 2 years.

I say, buy pullups. Teach him how to pull down and up his pants. He will let you know. Don't push, or he won't want to do it. Go out and buy pullups. Tell him he's a big boy and he wears thos now. Good Luck

I wouldn't start toilet training until age 24 months unless a child is telling you he/she is ready before that. Give it some more time.
