Not for Christians only, but to all organized worship place goers, a line from a urdu poet - "Gardish falak ki bhala, chain deti hai kise insha, Ghanimat hai ki hamsurat yahan do-char baithe hain" . Translated - We all are anxious before the looming uncertainties of this world and looking for some consolation within fellow (and equally distraught) beings.

Church is the place where faith based individuals go to share in their beliefs, pay homage to their God and consider with others their existence. It is a place of instruction, learning and love. The church is blameless, it is the enemy who would attempt to defile the church by word, deed or indifference. Going to church is not a waste of my time... but that is not a call I can, or want to, make for you. You are looking for purpose? For the Christians or yourself? And I am not being mean either. I believe that it is time for "Christians," or faith-based individuals to stop being so perfect and pure and strive to enjoy life at its fullest. That means enjoy the whole world and everyone it it, on its terms but not under its rules of behavior or ethics or morals. Everyone thinks everyone else is wrong. Can't we stop fighting and start living- regardless of what we believe. Death is a personal thing, so is what you believe for those things after death. If someone has the keys to afterlife they should by all means share their message without trying to force it or "lord it over"- they should also be free from fear of being abused because of their beliefs. Can't we all make our own choices and see to enjoy others' beauty.

A lot of one's religious practice is not meant to be done at church. There is praying that can be done at home, and charity to be given at all times. Treatment of one's fellow man is more important than church attendance. However, the New Testament does advise that we should not forsake the gathering of ourselves together. Also, in my church, the Holy Eucharist is a focal point, and cannot be done in private by oneself. So we go to church. I find the church services very uplifting. Also, because I am a member of a religion that is a statistical minority locally (and a misunderstood one at that), it's nice to gather with other people who believe the same way I do (rather than the usual scenario of having to constantly defend my beliefs against people who don't).

A functional church provides its members with a community of like-minded people who help each other out through thick and thin. They go to their church for friendship, faith and support. For them, it is not a waste of time. It makes them happy, makes them feel loved and secure. These are all very valid and very real purposes!

You are to go there to fellowship with other Christians.
You are to keep one another strong in the Faith.
You listen to sermons/messages by the Leader (different depending upon denomination or non denomination) to inspire and strengthen you.
Christians are to work with other Christians to increase the Faith and help those in need.
Church going was not intended to give you a feeling of superiority, be used as a place to show off new clothes or make business contacts only, have another forum to gossip in or any of the bad things that people sometimes do...
A lot of reasons...

The Bible tells us not to forsake the gathering of ourselves together. And, the first Christians met on the first day of the week (Sunday). We go to church for fellowship, to hear God's Word being preached, to comfort one another, to uplift one another, to learn. Some people have jobs to do at church, Sunday School teacher, singing in the choir, driving the Sunday School Bus, etc.
If you are not a Christian, why do you care why we do it?

whether a person goes to a church or not---WHAT BUSINESS IS IT OF YOURS ---to THEM it serves a purpose and that is all that matters---they aren't hurting YOU by going to a church----what hurts is when people like YOU critize someone for their beliefs... Let them believe what THEY want to believe and leave them in peace and VICE VERSA!!!!! Geez--- by the way just so you know---I don't go to church---I'm not sure WHAT I believe and I am terminally ILL and will find out soon enough what there is OR ISN'T.... if I can come back and tell ya, I WILL

The Scripture says "Do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together as the manner of some men is". It's purpose is to find refuge from the world, guidance and wisdom from Godly men and women and celebrate your love for God and how He's worked for you in life.

A real answer from a Christian: church isn't required. We go to worship and to fellowship. It creates a "community of believers," and while there are other ways to have that community, going to services is probably the easiest.
