The term "rock" signifies a cornerstone; a beginning from which the rest is established. Jesus called Peter the rock "upon which" he would build the church. notice how the majority of the New Testament is written by Paul and the church based on Paul's teachings. Paul wasn't around to hear Jesus teach; however he received his knowledge from Peter. Peter was the "rock" upon which the "church" was built by Paul.

You're absolutely right when you say that Peter was the first Pope. Pope is, after all, just "Papa" and all bishops were called that, and all bishops shared the same episcopal authority.
You are also right when you say we should all be Catholic, but which Catholic Church is the ancient Church? Is it the Orthodox Catholic or the Roman Catholic? Papal supremacy came later (as opposed to papal primacy), and the Pope, sadly, has been in schism since he first asserted that supremacy and nobody outside of his own jurisdiction recognized it. I hope that in the future this problem will be rectified, but the papacy is in schism and has been for a thousand years and must return to the ancient Catholic Church.

Some people believe that he was not talking about Peter when he said "this rock." There were a group of Pagans that operated a temple known as the Gates of Hell. It was located in a barren, rocky location. It's believed that Jesus and his followers were in this location when he made that comment. Implying that he would establish his church in that very location and that the pagans would not be able to prevail against it. Some people also believe that Jesus was talking about the statement that Peter had made previously that Jesus was the Son of the living God. That upon that truth he would build his church. I guess it's all in the interpretation.

I always see it as Christ appointing Peter as Apostle to the Jews in the same way that He sent Paul to the gentiles. There is no such thing as a pope. Jesus Christ is the head of the church and there is no other. We do not need representatives before God, Jesus became the ultimate priest and mediator when He laid down His life in sacrifice for sin.

Actually, ya kind of have it backwards.
The Catholic church decided that since Peter was given commission by Christ to be the founder of the Church, that they would name their first Pope as that same Peter.
However, the Church of Christ does not have any building. It is made up of true believers and followers of Christ. Peter is
OUR founder, not the Catholic's founder.
Peter at no point said "watch as I accomplish the mandate of Jesus Christ, and set up the Catholic Church".
No, not "all Christians" should be Catholic.
The Catholic Pope should have his people start following Christ instead of following the Church's traditions and rules.

You are right. Originally all Christians were Catholic until the reformation.
Martin Luther himself said...he wanted to stop one bad pope and ended up making hundreds. Every man became his own pope after the reformation...hence all the different interpretations of scripture etc.

The old testament clearly refers to God alone as being the Rock. Rock of our salvation many many verses. Jesus said if a man hears and does my words I will shew yo what he is like he is like a man building his house on a Rock. Notice Jesus referred to himself as the Rock. The bible also says no other foundation can be laid other than that which is laid which is Christ Jesus. He is also referred to as the Chief cornerstone and a Rock of offense. In the book of Peter we see that the spiritual Rock that followed them in the wilderness was Christ. Does it make any sense that God would declare himself to be our Rock and then relinquish that title to Peter. When you see a verse in the bible that is hard to understand it helps to compare with other verses. This is the manner in whhich Jesus answered Satan wen being tempted. Notice satan quoted scripture but Jesus answered with it is written. God has always supposed to have been the foundation of our faith not mere men. The Apostle Paul expressed concrn when he heard that some of the believers were alligning themselves up behind there favourite apostle. He answered did I die for you? Is Christ divided? No Paul didn't die for us nor did Peter.Which is why our faith should always have been in Jesus. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life in any man believes in me (not Peter or any denmoniation). Also notice what is completely absent in the new testament is any reference to Peter as Pope. Not only was Peter married (tis is in scripture) there is a verse that says a bishop should be the husband of one wife. Jesus once warend some of the ost religious people in his day you make the word of God of no effect by your traditions. All of us need to be careful as wel could easily fall int the same trap. Paul also had to correct Peter once as he caught him being a hypocrit. I'm not mentioning this to belittel Peter but only to demonstrate he was a good man but Jesus never made him the head of the church. A few chapters after Jesus allegedly made him the head of the church he had to tell him get behind me Satan. I find it hard to believe but some actually think that in order to get saved you need to do it through the Catholic church. As if God needed anyone's permission to save anybody. One final point there was no Roman catholic church in the new testament those. What we do find are those who were simply called Christians. (I should let you in I am a former Catholic and my brother was going through to be a priest). I also had a relative who was in the Christian brothers for many years. I have no anomosity towards catholics. As a child my parents taught me one important truth. They told me to put God first. (that is essence is the first commandment) It should be easy to understand then if we put God first that means above any person or organization). It is in adherance to that truth that my whole family left the Catholic church. The word for peter in greek is petros which is stone. Petra was what Christ referred to himself as. The greek versions are the earlest versions of the new testament although Jesus most likely spoke Hebrew as did the other hebrew Rabbi's. There were some Aramaic words thrown in. Although the new testament was once thought to be written in Aramaic it transltes much bettr backwards into Hebrew.
