I don't have a lot of extra money, but I am a firm believer in treating the person who cares for my child 8 hours a day, 5 days a week--as well as I am able. An in home daycare provider deserves just as many "extras" as a teacher at a daycare facility-for different reasons.
The teachers at my kids daycare do not get holiday pay -for any holiday (but the parents pay the center). go figure.
A gift card to a restaurant; free movie passes; lotions; candles; flavored coffees; etc. I wouldn't give cash (although I did for an in-home provider).

Whether they're another Hallmark invented holiday or not, it's one of the most deserved "appreciation days" out there.
I usually do something like a candle, or go in with a few parents and do a gift card for dinner for two at a nice restaurant.
EDIT: Have you ever seen the paychecks of these child care providers? I don't make a lot, but I make more than they do, and their jobs require an enormous amount of work, energy, patience, love, and kindness. A good daycare teacher's paycheck does not reflect the work they do. What other profession would accept such a small paycheck for watching sometimes up to 18-20 kids, teaching them what they need to know, hustling them to the potty when they've halfway wet their pants, wiping backsides, kissing booboos, reading stories to a classroom of hyperactive four-year-olds, taking them on field trips, breaking up arguments, getting vomited on, dealing with overbearing or difficult parents, then go home, take care of their own families, getting up and doing it all again the next day?

No, this is not made up by Hallmark. It is a nationally recognized holiday. As a daycare provider, it is always nice to be remembered. Something as simple as small boquet of flowers, or a journaling book are always nice.
If your childcare provider is a home daycare provider, try a small gift bag filled with pens, sticky notes, a coffee mug, tape, etc. If your childcare provider is center-based, a travel mug is always a nice gift. Anything personal is always extra special.

It may have been started by Hallmark, but it's sweet just the same. If you feel compelled to get a gift, imagine what you would like if you were with many small children all day! Fancy bath products? Indulgent candies?
