Used to run a year ago, almost 2 miles a day. I had cramp issues later.

Shin splints? I am an avid fan of my treadmill, sometimes! LOL, No, really you need to do stretches before any workouts, including walking, cardio, or weights. These limber you up to prevent those terrible shin splints, or worse. I walk at least 45 minutes a day and up to 1hour. I am waling at 3.8 mph in the middle of my workout but I excelerate at a pace of a few minutes and decelerate the same way. Slowly increase and decrease speeds. First week 10 minutes and the next week go up a minute or two until you have reached the peak at which you want to maintain.

I also started using my treadmill. I started with 10 mins, then 15, now im at 20-25. I've only been using it for 3 days so I hope to be running for 30 mins some day. I've heard it's very bad to start out fast, don't forget to warm up/cool down when appropriate and also : Drink enough water to keep you hydrated:) Happy treading.

Try walking outdoors instead. I definitely appreciate the scenery.

Just hop in the car and drive somewhere new like a park, wilderness, fancy neighborhood, whatever, and then just start walking. It's much more interesting, and usually leads to longer walks.
