Does anyone know what an LI-9 is? I couldn't find out how to get one if I'm out-of-state and I'm in the military. The customer service number is giving me a busy signal and the local offices have no clue (or don't feel like helping me). It won't let me renew online...

Texas honors active duty military members (spouses and dependents are excluded) driver licenses even after expiration. Texas supplies a LI-9 card to carry in addition to your expired license showing proof

In another part of the website it says this :

“The validity of any Texas driver’s license held by any person who enters or is in the United States armed forces shall continue in full force and effect so long as the service continues ..."

The Texas "LI-9" form is the Texas Identification card.

When I was a resident of Texas serving the military, I maintained my Texas drivers license which used in conjuction with my military ID card was sufficient if stopped by law enforcement.

Most law enforcement agencies are aware of the "military exception" to drivers licenses as long as you maintain your residency with the state from which the drivers license was issued!

Best wishes.

My husband is military and I am from Texas. I actually left Texas in 2002. I just go online and renew my driver license there. You just keep the same pic and they send you a license in the mail. Of course I have family there and use my mom's address as my permanent address and then just give them my mailing address. Just do a search for renewing texas drivers license online. Hope this helps!!

Just keep trying. Hubby will have the same issue next year - I can have mine renewed by mail either way. You *can* have the address changed on your license to your regular mailing address out of state.
