Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.
Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels and making CO2. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming, which is mostly caused by CO2:

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is by far the most important greenhouse gas. It is responsible for 9-26% of the total greenhouse effect (the range is due to spectral overlapping with the other gasses), and is accountable for over 50% of the warming seen in the past century. And, contrary to what several people here have said, water vapor, while it does play an important role in the greenhouse effect, cannot by itself force the climate and is not considered a GHG.

There is no connection it is a scam and u are helping.
CO2 GOD put plants here several million years ago to take care of the CO2 and they have done a great job.
The methane scam > Where is the great amount of methane . It is not where it is supposed to be it is a very light gas.
These are 2 of the green house gases and nature has taken care of it just like it should of been and without my help.If these gas has been taken care of then there is no global warming.

Water vapor is the most significant. It, like all the greenhouse gasses, allows sunlight to pass but blocks the infrared radiation from the ground.
