In Genesis 1:27-30 God gave the stewardship (day to day control) of the earth to man (Adam). When Adam sinned, he gave that control to satan. That is why he is referred to as "the god of this world".

So when satan offered it back to Jesus, it was a real temptation. Jesus could have gotten back the control of earth without having to go through the suffering of the cross. But if he had, it would not have been the same.

Jesus would have legally gotten control, but spiritually, man would still have the retained the fallen nature of Adam. So Jesus would have gained earth, but lost the ability to take men to heaven. In the end, satan would still have won.

Rather by going through the cross, Jesus took back the authority of the earth (See Matthew 28:18,19). He then commissioned his followers to go in that authority and reclaim the earth from the mess the devil had made of it.

His power was obtained by the fall of Eve. He still obtains his power today by what people reject or have given up. Until the victory of the Lord Jesus at Calvary the devil held the keys to death, hell and the grave.

He had power over the human body which was under the curse of the ground. Everything that died went down to the ground prior to Calvary. The devil was even present at the death of Moses to contend for the body of Moses.

Being god of this world, with power under the curse of the ground, the devil also retains power by deceiving the earthly minds of men with unfounded imaginations which deny the word of God. Ever notice has much power a liar can maintain in human relations. A false witness can even get the wrong person killed and take the property and peace of righteousness men.

He amassed his power through the sins, the minds and the desires of men.

The new Testament tells us that Satan is the ruler of this world. It also tells us that we are all the devil's children until we accept Christ and receive rebirth through His Holy Spirit. Satan was offering what is his to Christ but it meant that he would then be subject to sin as we are. When Jesus died on the cross He defeated death and deposed Satan fom his throne. The bible tells us that when Jesus was lifted up He made a public spectacle of Satan and all his demons. We will see the result of it when Jesus returns.

He is a deceptor, and the power he claims to have and give is nothing more than an illusion. He was trying to tempt, and so he made grand boasts, just like he did with Eve, telling her that eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil would make her God. He is the father of lies, and we would do well to remember that. Live, laugh, love and enjoy!

He was trying to give all the of his people to Jesus, but Jesus had to worship him.

He knows that what Jesus loves the most are the people, and Satan was tempting Him so that he would be the King of Kings.

As you know, Jesus knew better..

Take care.

He didn't, he was just trying to brag. The devil knows the only power he has is what he is allowed to have.
