I am a Christian. I think the cross is one of the ugliest things in the world, one of the ugliest symbols. The cross is the place where guilt, shame, sin etc. is to be for the person being crucified. The cross is for the vilest of the vile! But now if we speak of the resurrection. I think everyone who follows Christ should wear a resurrection chain, someone needs to make one with an open tomb! He has risen!

I'm not ignorant in understanding that Christians wear the cross to remember the death of Christ, but why not make one to remember the resurrection of Christ? The resurrection is mentioned 4 times more than the crucifiction of Jesus is in the Scriptures. It is when he was resurrected that sin was done, it is finished! Now we await our resurrection bodies, that is, for those who follow the Savior.

Never did I say that we should not wear a cross. Re-read what I said above. So many people answer this question with their own ideas of no you shouldn't or yes you should wear a cross. Re-read please.

Actually, the cross is intended to symbolize the resurrection (unless it is more of a Catholic style called the crucifix). The Crucifix is a cross with Jesus hanging on it, which I don't particularly like because I don't want the reminder of His death. The empty cross represents the empty tomb and the fact that though Jesus did take on our guilt, shame, sin, etc., He is victorious over death and the grave. The cross is a celebration of that.

"By creating a priesthood that administers over a weekly sacrifice of Christ, Catholicism is perpetuating a form of religion that is in a sense still locked into the Old Testament. The good news is that the work is done, and that forgiveness of sins comes through faith alone–not through sacraments or through the church–and is based on the one-time atoning death of Christ. If the crucifix were only a reminder of Christ's sacrificial work, most Protestants might have no objection to it. But His atoning work is not a continuing, mystical activity tied to a weekly ritual; it was a one-time historical event. The results of that work are eternal, and Christ's sacrifice was decreed from eternity, but the reality of that finished work is best represented by an empty cross."

The cross is the most beautiful symbol on this planet b/c Christ gave it all their and he died for our sins so that's why I wear a cross around my neck. I mean I understand where you are coming from about the chain to represent the resurrection but you should not say that the cross is the ugliest thing in the world b/c if it was not for the cross and Jesus dying on it than you might not know what it feels like to be saved.

OK, a little clarification.

First, there is a form of the cross, called a crucifix, that specifically brings to mind the crucifixion. It is worn by many Christians and has the figure of the crucified Christ.

Second, there is the "empty cross," consisting of almost any cross without a figure upon it. The purpose of the empty cross is to identify the victory of Jesus ("death, where is thy sting" is how Paul might put it.)

There is a movement to remove crosses from Christian churches being pushed by the Unification Church (Rev. Sun Myung Moon.) They approach a church and offer to help with the costs of replacing the cross with a crown for reasons of their own theology. I don't approve myself, just reporting it.

Likewise, the Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) have opposed the cross for many years as well. You won't find a cross on a devout Mormon.

I wear a cross myself. 1 Corinthians 2:2 "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." Sounds like Paul would be ok with a cross to me. But we don't know, since the cross became a symbol of Christianity around the time of Constantine, not before.

The cross did not become a religious symbol at all until Christ died on one. Many people were crucified in those days. I can see your point about wearing an "empty tomb" necklace, but the cross is not ugly to me. It means so much more than that. It is where Jesus took OUR guilt, shame, etc. upon Himself. I prefer to wear a cross with Christ not on it, to show that He went to the cross, but is no longer there - He is risen indeed!

I don't like a cross with Jesus hanging on it. That is for sure! I have often wanted to go up to the Pope and whip that little thing out of his hand and ask, "Didn't anyone tell you that He has risen?" I really don't like how the Catholics keep an emaciated Jesus hanging on the cross as if He is still hanging there, dead, when He is ALIVE and SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER.

That being said. The cross to me, though I don't wear one or look toward one in worship is a beautiful place in that this is where the once and for all atonement for all the world's sins was paid. It was the most precious gift our Heavenly Father has given to us because it is our belief in this event and Jesus rising again on the third day that we receive our salvation. Praise be to God!

the ugliest thing is where weeping a gnashing of teeth, becausee no one has to here but many will

the cross is where the Christ took all the sins of the world and shows how much Jesus loved us, ugly or not with the burial, and the Resurrection it becomes beautiful because in this is salvation
We too must follow in step
to die out to sin in repentance,
be buried in His name by water baptize in 'Jesus name"
and be resurrected, be filled with the Holy Ghost and live new in Christ
this is stated in Acts 2:38

Hats off to you sir. Yes, the cross is touted as being one thing by the Christian church, but in reality it is a symbol of hate and bigotry.
And another thing...why do slutty female rock stars wear crosses around their necks while posing partially nude for album covers?

The cross is to show us the price that was paid for our sins and the salvation it brought us, the resurrection does not remind us not to sin.
