I used to smack mine with my hand, but I used to threaten them with their dad`s slipper sometimes. I never had to use it though.

Only bad behaviour like swearing, and answering back would warrant a smacking in our house, after the age of five! Reason works better on older children, so my son rarely got smacked, not because he was well behaved, but because he learnt early not to answer back, his punishment was no TV or Computer time. My daughter was the one most likely to get a smack from me, I only used my hand and it was on the legs or bottom. A quick slap across the leg twice in her life was the only physical punishment she ever received from her Dad and she can remember both and the reason for them even though she's 32! (I had a violent father I hate men hitting women or children) normally the threat of a smack from him was enough to curb them both though.
Children need discipline but that can be done without resorting to belts and whips! the program was horrifying!

I used to get a belt. If I was REALLY bad, I had to drop my pants. I remember one time my mom made me pick a branch off of a tree for it. The worst was when I moved and the belt got my legs and left whelps. (A wooden spoon when I was very young.)
With that said, I grew up in a loving home with great parents (who have different views of discipline than I).
I didn't see the program you are referring to.
I have vowed to never spank my child. It will be a last resort if I do (and I hope it never happens). I only feel this way b/c I fear ever doing it out of anger. I truly believe there are other, effective ways to discipline.

Children should be smacked only when necessary and not with a belt etc. A short sharp smack will make them realise they've done wrong. It's the threat of a smack that keeps the child in line.Smacking too often is counter productive. I was only smacked a few times throughout my childhood but I knew that it was a possibility and behaved. If the lefties ban smacking you will get kids telling parents what schoolchildren tell teachers now.."Can't touch me, I know my rights."
This silly 'naughty step' is PC gone mad.
There is a vast difference between smacking and child abuse and every right minded parent should know the difference.

The only time I have smacked my child is over her pants on the thigh, very lightly, to get her attentio. This is only once in a blue moon, and she knows I am not doing it out of anger, and doesn't cry. I slapped her across the face once (not that hard!!) when she slapped me, and she NEVER did that again. I think there are ways of disciplining without spanking. I was spanked, and it only made me angry and fear my parents, not respect them.

I threaten to spank/smack my older son more than I actually do because I hate to spank him but when I absolutely have to I use my hand on his bottom. If he is really really bad then he gets the fly swatter to the bottom. I'd never spank my kids with a wooden paddle or a switch. My mom used to make me and my siblings go pick our switch for her and you knew not to get a bad (weak or dried up) one or else you'd get spanked even harder. I used to have horrible whelps left on my legs from her spanking me...I'd never do that to my children..EVER. Times are different now then they were even when I was young and I was born in 1980 so times changed fast....

when i was growing up my mom spanked with what ever was close to her. the remote tree branch a thin one. a belt an electrical cord like an extension cord not one attached to anything or a flyswatter. i will never hit my son with anything but my hand and not more than a couple swats time outs work better for him

I personally don't smack my children, I don't need to. Sitting them out works well enough. One cannot have an opinion though on how a parent brings up their children. Not unless you believe the child is in real danger.
