Gepetto in the WHALE?
I think you have confused Jonah with Pinocchio.
Right?

The story of Pinnochio was originally written as a Christian allegory. The idea of wanting to become a "real boy" is an allegoray for the Christian experience of being "born again". Most of the other events in the story have direct analogues in either Chrisitan theology and/or Catholic cathecism.
So the story of Gepetto in the whale was most likely based on the Old Testament record of Jonah. As that was an actual event, the answer to the question is a "yes".

Gepetto built a whale puppet. The puppet ate Gepetto.
Whenever the whale lied, his nose grew.
Once, the whale sneezed and spew Gepetto out of the big whale nose.
And so Pinocchio became the carpenter's son and fell in love with the Virgin Mary.
I hope that helps.

Sort of, the author of the story got his ideas from his autographed copy of Moby Dick.
