There are lots of great things to do in Sacramento. There is a River Cruise, at least one of which is a Mystery Theater. It's in Old Sac(ramento.) The Rail Road Museum in also in Old Sac. It has been hailed as one of the best railroad museums in the world by those who know. It has a weekend old fashioned steam train trip that's about 16 miles long.
Capitol Mall is just outside of Old Sac and has four beautiful fountains between Old Sac and the Capitol building. That takes us to the Capitol itself. It was redone about 10 years ago, and the grounds have an interesting history of their own. The tour of the grounds is self-led, with a flier to tell you about it.
Next, along Capitol Avenue (the original name of Capitol Mall, and the continuing name of it from the Capitol to 29th street, is some beautiful new construction to see.
From 16th street to 28th street on H street and N street are the Painted Ladies -Victorian homes that have either been maintained or restored beautifully.
Continue on J street from 30th to 50th streets, and from J street to Folsom Boulevard (=M) is The Fabulous Forties - a variety of styles of homes worth seeing. 42nd street is the most impressive of those.
For children, there is a Zoo, and right across the street is Fairtale Town -not to be missed by adults, either. And nearby is a small amusement park with rides just for kids, small. Between them is the pony rides, again for kids.
Visible from both the Zoo and Fairytale Town is an amphitheater with evening performances during the summer. The Sacramento Bee and The Sacramento News and Review should both have listings of further venues to see, such as the free "Summer Sammies." Those are Friday night free rock (generally) concerts at 10th and I streets in a one block refirbished park.
A great (and greatly missed on my part because I just moved to Tx) buffet is part Hawaiian, part American food, Luau Gardens. There is a long list of all kinds of ethnic and American food restaurants.
I had an Honors History Class that used Sacramento as an example of how a city becomes industrialized, so I could go on and on. If you would like to know more, please email me at a.creative1@sbcglobal.net. I would appreciate it if you sent no spam, though, thank you. If you are interested in something specific, let me know. I hope your family reunion is lots of fun.

Not really. The good thing about Sacramento is that it's close to other places (i.e. Tahoe, Napa, SF). A lot of people go to Old Sacramento (it's still all old and western and is right by the river). If you or anyone is a baseball fan, catch a River Cats game (the stadium is on the river across from Downtown and is very nice). If you like wine tasting, there's lots of that around -- El Dorado county is beautiful, but Lodi's closer. It's not very pretty, but they still have good Zin. Otherwise, just catch some dinner in Mid town. If you drive down Capitol (oh yeah, the state capitol is one this street too is you wanna check that out...) you'll see some good restaurants, wine bars, etc.

Shelly is right, the good thing about Sac is its proximity to cool places.
It does havea zoo which isn't too bad.
They have an IMAX movie theater
You can go on a boat ride up and down the river, the boat leaves out of old townj
If you are into bicycling, the is a bike path that goes along the river
If you come after memorial day, you can rent jet skis and ride up and down the river
They have a good theater down town that just finished a run with the guy that used to play the husband on Roasanne and the guy that used to be John Boy on the Waltons
There are some huge shopping malls if that is your idea of fun (not mine)
