Atheists do not KNOW that God is not, they BELIEVE there is no God.

I personally think it makes more sense to believe in a religion than in monkeys' theory (evolution)

Ask an atheist if he knows everything: No.
Ask an atheist if he knows half of everything: No.
Suppose the atheist does know half of everything.
Now suppose that God is in the half that he does not know.
Based on this model, it is clearly illogical to state that God doesn't exist. One would have to know everything in order to conclude the non-existence of God legitimately.
Whereas, the believer only has to know one thing: that he/she has encountered God, or evidence for God.
So it is completely un-intellectual for anyone to claim that their isn't a God. At best, they can simply claim that they have not yet encountered God to have any knowledge of him. Therefore, the furthest you can get away from belief in God and still retain any since of credibility is agnosticism. Atheism is a faith. It is something that must be believed outside of scientific evidence. Atheism is just as religious as any other dogma. There is no proof that there is no God, so the best stance they can take is to claim not to know one way or the other.

No... you are not right. Not by a longshot. Atheism can be considered to be a 'belief', or a 'religion', only in the same sense that one might regard NOT collecting stamps to be a 'hobby'.

Consider the following sentence:

I do believe that god does exist.

That sentence can be negated in two ways:

1. I DO NOT believe that god DOES exist.

2. I DO believe that god DOES NOT exist.

The first sentence expresses the WEAK atheist position, also known as the 'agnostic-atheist' position. The second sentence represents the STRONG atheist position... a VERY SMALL subset of atheists.

The weak atheist position is characterized by an ABSENSE of belief, brought about by the lack of evidence that would be necessary to initiate or sustain a state of 'belief'. In this sense, the absence of belief in god is equivalent to an absence of belief in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Thor, garden gnomes, bridge trolls and china teapots in orbit around the sun (Bertrand Russell). The weak atheist (agnostic) position bears no burden of proof, since it is not asserting anything to be 'true'. The position merely finds that there is no compelling evidence to support the idea that supernatural sky-fairies (gods) exist.

The STRONG atheist position is arrived at by a CERTAINTY that god DOES NOT exist, and implies that compelling evidence exists to support such a certainty. That being the case, it would seem that the strong atheist position DOES bear a burden of proof, since it is asserting that 'no god' is a 'true' proposition.

I think that dogmatic, faith-based 'belief' itself is the culprit and the enemy, since it effectively cuts off the mind from the intellectually honest consideration of alternative possibilities.

I wonder whether there is an Atheist sort of bible, they must have some sort of commandments to guide their behavior through life? Did Atheist prove that there is no God? On the other hand, Atheists might ask me whether the believers proved it. Well, believers proved in their own way, through circumstances, that there is a God and registered their belief in a Bible. Atheist, just claim that there is no God and that is that.

believers do not KNOW there IS a god.... they BELIEVE there is a god.....

Personally, it makes more sense to me to believe in evolutional theories (apes & a common ancestor NOT monkeys! Read a book!) rather than believing some lucky charms leprechaun god snapped his fingers and everything just appeared. If he can make everything & is all powerful why did he do everything in 6 days instead of just snapping everything into existence in one? If he is all powerful why did he need to rest on the 7th day? Why does he need food & sacrifices from humans?

Easy answer.... humans created god to help ease their fears of the afterlife. The storm comes.... Oooh god is angry with us! let's jab a knife through the heart of a virgin to make him happy.... Oh look, the storm stopped.... what a coincidence. (not a coincidence when modern humans KNOW that storms do not last forever, they eventually subside.) Religions are archaic means of explaining things that could not be explained. If you were to meet someone from the era of jesus' supposed life on earth.... they'd look at you and think YOU were a god. Primitive people often seek answers to life's mysteries in myths, superstitions and fairy tales. They deny fact in favor of preaching some invisible sky daddy who created everything.

Monotheists are trying to prove a postive, that god exists. Ergo, they must say they "believe" god exists, since they cannot prove otherwise. Atheists, on the other hand, do not have to say they believe god doesn't exist. They can just say god doesn't exist. Until the positive is proven, that god does exist, the negative stands as fact and can't be disputed.

you can believe what you believe. each to thier own. i feel that religions seperate ppl & cause disputes (ie. major wars in the past) unnecessary ones. i think religions were made because a lot of ppl need something to live for. if you were told that you just lived for 80 years or so then died & that was it, the suicide rate would be incredible. also in order to keep people in line & to define whats considered "right" & "wrong." i could go on for hooouurs about this, but ive learned that it doesnt really change much in most ppl's minds.

but just because something "makes more sense" (in your opinion) doesnt mean its the right way to go, or that everyone that thinks the opposite is wrong. dont be so close-minded.

Being an Atheist does not mean one has no sense of believing that which is proven true. An atheist just doesn't believe in a supernatural all-powerful supreme creator entity called God.

An atheist may believe that as humans we need air and water to survive... but doesn't mean they believe IN air and water to be sentient enough to be of any communicative value... or superior enough to effect changes in their way of life, if air and water is spoken to or communicated with

No, you would be wrong.

Substitute the word 'God' with the word unicorn, or 'dragon' or 'fairies' or 'mermaid'.

Or even with 'Zeus', 'Odin', 'Ra', or any of the old gods.

I do not need to positively disprove the existence of all these things to not believe in them. If you think that I need to do the same, then please provide the proof of non-existence of any of the above.

What you personally think has no bearing on reality. Evolution is an established fact, and has a well tested theory to explain it. That is reality. Get used to it.

Maybe I am misinterpreting Atheism, but I believe that I have not obtained the knowledge to make a decision regarding whether there is or is not a god. I do not let faith play a part in my decision making process (including things like voting, natural disasters, mortality).
I consider myself Atheist because I don't believe in a god, but I also don't rule out the possibility that I am wrong because I know I don't know everything.

There are two ways to look at this:

1) Atheism is a belief. Since one cannot logically disprove there is a god (you cannot prove a negative), that would constitute a belief. Therefore, Atheism is a belief in no god.

2) Atheism is a lack of a belief in a god. Since Atheism does not believe there is a god, there is no belief, just a lack of one. Ergo, Atheism is not a belief.

I think that #1 holds more of a logical argument and conclusion that #2.

BTW - I am an agnostic.
