Considering the condition she was in, I think you should keep her.

Hello, sounds like she's been lost a long time..depending on how long you've had her..etc..I'd check the newspapers, local vets, grocery or pets stores, post offices for any Lost Dog calls or signs matching her description, etc...especially if she is some sort of purebred...or place an ad in a local newspaper asking if anyone's lost a dog with some description of the dog - leave something out that only the owner would know like a spot of color in a certain place, to please respond with details to the newspaper or the vets number that you used...don't use your own address or phone number, unless it's a biz number anyway...that might help. Our daughter found a shi tzu ( sp?) that had gotten off it's leash in a walk that had been missing for a month surviving in the fields, the guy showed crying he was soo happy that he found her & she was alive !!! Take Care :)

Contact your local PD, and those in towns around you, to state you found the dog. Also post an add on craigslist.org and www.petfinder.com of 'found dog'. If noone responds within a month or two, she's yours. If people call, be sure to sk them for identifying info about the dog, and insist they bring a picture of her when they come to pick her up.

I know many on here assume the dog was abandoned or mistreated, but while it's possible, you don't know that for SURE- she could have 'run away' or gotten loose from her home months ago, surviving on her own until now, and her family could be missing her dearly. Do the right thing- do your best to find her owner.

Yes, you should try to find the owner. Chances are that someone is missing her dearly!

Call the local Animal Control, police non-emergency number and post "Found Dog" signs on Supermarket and Pet Store community boards. While she's at the vet, have her scanned to see if she has a microchip.

If you don't get any response, she's yours to keep.

I think you're a great person for taking her to the vet and getting her cleaned up!

If it was your dog that was lost (being positive here), what would you want? Would you want the person that found your pet to look for its owner? I know I would....

Do your best to find the owner if she has one. If the vet found no microchip, post ads on craigslist (if you have one in your area), at the vets office, pet stores, etc. If nothing comes of the ads in a couple of weeks, then she's probably a stray, or the owners stopped looking. Then you can keep her if you want.

Always try to find the owner. Did the vet scan the pet for a chip? Have you checked with local vets and/or the animal shelter to see if there have been any inquiries?

Try posting a FOUND DOG ad on: http://www.dogdetective.com

Could never hurt!

I would really try to find her owner. I mean the person could live across town or across the state from you and that's why it doesn't seem like they are trying very hard to find your new arrival. Keep trying. In the long run, at least you will be able to know in the depth of your concious that you did everything you possibly could to help this animal.

at least try to look for the owner she may have been stolen out of the persons yard and they might be looking for her i would have the vet scan her and see if she is chipped . put up flyers with a phone number only no pic and see if someone calls you if not then keep her if you can but at least try to find the owner.

you can check with your local ACO or shelter/police dept to see if anyone has reported a lost dog, but my guess is that if the dog was in that bad of shape, and needed medical attention, either the family won't reclaim the dog or post for it because it was neglected anyhow, or they dumped it because it needed medical help. Either way, its up to you if you want to take on the responsibility. I would not dump the dog at the local pound though, I would find a rescue to take them, there are rescue's listed by state with contact information on petfinder, look under state/province listings. Putting a dog in most pounds/ kill shelters is a death sentence. I work in rescue transport and the things I have seen keep me up at night, its stuff that the general public never sees, it would give you nightmares. 12.5 million cats and dogs die every year in pounds and shelters, either gassed by carbon monoxide gas (not a nice death, PETA has videos if you want to know the facts) heartstick and leathel injection. You can also check with the AKC if you think the dog might be pure bred.

You are a good Samaritan. I would read the lost & found in your newspaper and see if someone lost the dog that you have. It sounds like to me the dog got a better place to live.

I would keep looking, but not too hard. Check to see if anyone called the pound about a missing dog, and look in the newspaper for a missing dog of that description. If you don't find anything, keep her.
