Any kind is fine. The caveat is you really shouldn't let your dog on it until after a good soaking rain. I have Bloodhounds which are extremely sensitive to chemicals. I don't use them. They also tend to be grazers.

There are no "good kinds" of weed killers for animals.
Generally speaking animals will not eat or graze on treated fields because of the smell (these smells dissipate over time usually in a week depending on rain, soil etc.)
What I do with my Labrador is supervise his activities for a couple days. As you know Dogs see their world through their nose. Dogs with their hyper sense of smell will pick up the change immediately and investigate. That's when I reinforce "NO, do not eat" with a treat and a pat on the head and play time. He associates that smell as BAD. He remembers for the next time although I still reinforce. Works great.

Weed killer is serious stuff.. The best thing is to keep your dog out of the area until the chemicals have dissipated into the soil.
