I have heard that selling things for 1/3 or 1/4 of what you paid for an item is a good asking price.

Make sure all items are clean! If it is a piece of junk, toss it. If it is clothing, make sure it is clean and on a hanger or folded.
Arrange items neatly. Use tables, plywood on sawhorses, etc.
Do not overprice items. People are coming to a yard sale to purchase things for a good price. If they want to pay full price, they can go buy the item new at the store.
Yard sales can be a lot of fun and a big money maker. (as long as you price things at a reasonable price). If it is missing parts or does not work, throw it away or put it in a free box. People like that.
Mark item clearly. I like to used the colored dots that you buy in the stationery dept. You can get them blank or already priced.
Advertise well - use neon colored poster board. The small pieces work best. If you are afraid of rain cover with clear contact type paper or plastic wrap and tape.
Use clear lettering and make the signs legible from across the street.
Good luck and have fun! If you have any questions about how to price items, you can email me.

Always ask for a bit more then you want for them. Remember it is a garage sale, people are not looking to pay a lot of money. You are most of the time lucky to make a quarter or what you paid for something. The point is, make the price slightly higher then what you want because it gives you room to bargain. A good Yard-saler will bargain. That way you have a better chance of getting what you really want for the item. Still may be less, but it will be that much closer.

Prices vary so much around my state.
When I moved to a small town I had to hit a few sales here to see how things were priced. I got great ideas on clothing because I just was not sure.
I do know if you have items above 40 dollars, many people take off 3/4 of the original cost. But if the item is less then a year you do not do that. It is what you want out of it and can get.
I have been know to give things to Young moms group because I could not see going down on something that was worth it. May sound funny just not taking the money but to me it was worth more and to give i to someone who could love it to seemed more important. And I knew they really needed it.
I allways place eye catchers towards the front. Like a great lamp, or nice furniture.( Tools are great catchers for men and women) Something that shows you have nice things and worth stopping by to see.

I have had many yard sales. I would say the rule of thumb is, how much do you want an item gone? The higher the prices the fewer the sales. So keep your prices low so things will fly out the door.
"A garage sale is a place where strangers pay you to take away your junk".
If it is valuable to you, keep your price higher, so you can bargain when someone wants. it.
Advertise well, Make plenty of large bright (yellow is best with bold black ink) signs.
Get 100 dollars in bills and change for your cashier box. Save plastic grocery bags to bag things for your customers.
Make sure you have as much as possible outside so customers can see them.. Have signs or balloons on your mail box so they will not miss it.
Good Luck.
Two other places to sell or give things away are Craig's list to sell and Free cycle.com to give things away.

I have had several in my life and I feel if you want to get rid of the stuff..price LOW..and it will all go and you wont have to package it up and haul it to good will and give away for free..if its low and people are unsure if they want it, or it will fit, or if its the right color. etc...they buy it anyway because whats to loose..if you price high...they will be scared to pay lots for something they are unsure of ..good luck and have fun..i also recommend having cookies or baked goods on hand to sell for 25 cents..maybe free coffee..food brings them in and they buy, buy, buy..lol
