Coma is the least responsive state of consciousness. It is different from sleep, as people who are asleep can be wakened, either easily or with some effort. People in coma cannot be awakened unless some cause for the coma is relieved.
Coma can be from many derangements in brain chemistry or from widespread traumatic effects in the brain. Neurologists are careful to distinguish coma from patients who are awake and unable to move. Sometimes with a disease like ALS patients get such widespread weakness, they might only be able to move their eyes to commands. Finding they can do something like that easily tells a doctor that the patient is awake even if he or she looks comatose due to the lack of responses to stimuli.
There are a number of words for states in between normal wakefulness and coma, such as drowsiness, stupor, and persistent vegetative state. They aren't precisely defined. It's just a spectrum from being normally awake and responsive, even hyperresponsive from caffeine or other stimulating factors, to comatose, which usually means a patient's eyes are closed and they only respond to simple commands or none at all.

A coma is a state of unconsciousness that has varying degrees.
A person in a coma has limited ability to respond to stimuli from his or her surroundings and can not be awakend.
Similar to a state of sleep, a coma is the brains way of shutting all but necessary input out in an effort to respond to an illness or injury.
A good analogy would be that it's similar to the way some computers respond to a program crash or malfunction. As the processor becomes overloaded with the demand of resolving the task of recovering normal operation, it makes all other programs inaccessible. Basically it's the brains way of rebooting it's operating system.
Some people in a coma may appear to be awake but have little or no ability to respond to their surroundings or other people.
Deep comas can seem like a very deep sleep, but with out the alfa brain wave activity we would normally see that is associated with dreaming.
Doctors know the symptoms of a coma, but really don't know fully what a coma is, or how to cure it.
Comas can last from as little 30 to 40 minutes, to as long as several years.

A coma is a profound state of unconsciousness. A comatose patient cannot be awakened, fails to respond normally to pain or light, does not have sleep-wake cycles, and does not take voluntary actions. Coma may result from a variety of conditions, including intoxication, metabolic abnormalities, central nervous system diseases, acute neurologic injuries such as stroke, and hypoxia.

To put this simple...
A comba is a state of unconciousness where you cannot be awakened by anything but the cause of the comba healing itself.
You can stay in a comba for just a day, or a week, a month or even several years depending in how bad the brain injury was. And sometimes you may never wake up.
Usually caused by severe head trauma like in car accidents, falling from high heights or anything when you knock you're head really hard.
But sometimes it's not caused by banging you're head, but can also be caused by seizures/convulsions if they are severe.
Hope this answers you're question : )

comas are when the body shuts down (either partially or completely-which leads to a need for life support). usually caused by trauma to the head or other injury in which blood blocks oxygen flow throughout the brain.
