The auto train runs only on the east coast.

If you can afford it, a sleeper is definitely the way to go. The prices are high however, and for what it will cost to take the train would pay for a whole lot more gasoline than what you'd spend driving cross country.

Still, train travel is relaxing, for the most part, and a good way to see the country while traveling.

Amtrak auto train only operates on the East Coast
from Lorton VA to Sanford Florida
thats the only auto train
however you could still travel to California and have your
SUV shipped separately by some automobile carriers
(some drive your SUV others put your car on a car carrier and
deliver to you that way
yes take Amtrak is a great way to see this country, and yes
you can get a sleeper (thats in addition to the fare
but it includes all your meals aboard the train.)
have fun

Any AMTRAK train is awesome. The auto train is usually a younger crowd and a bit more noisy but all the major AMTRAK trains are great. Especially the west coast long haulers
