OH, THE IGNORANCE! ! !
Purchase and possession of any Class 3 destructive device, whether a full-auto weapon, suppressor, or other device IS COMPLETELY LEGAL for any law-abiding American citizen, and DOES NOT require ANY special 'PERMIT' under U.S. law and/or BATFE regulation. All that is required is that the purchaser pass a Federal background check and pay a $200 transfer stamp tax upon delivery of the device.
A Class 3 FFL for businesses dealing with the sales and transfer of devices is handled through the BATFE offices, just like any standard Federal Firearms License.
For correct info, contact the closest Class 3 dealer in your locale. Do NOT bother local authorities, most do not have correct information to begin with.

grizly and art are both correct however not 100 percent correct the only firearms you can buy legally without a permit are those made before 1986 these weapons sell for around 10k with a class 3 license you can buy new automatic weapons which sell for a few hundred dollars more than their legal counterparts. look up the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 for proof

These people are wrong. You don't need a permit unless you want to sell these weapons. What you need to do is locate the gun that you want to purchase. If it is at a local dealer they can help you with the paper work. If its an internet or out of state purchase you need to find a local dealer with a class III license to do the transfer. There is additional paperwork that goes along with this purchase as well as a full background check and LEO sign-off. The BATFE processes all of the forms so it can take a few months and they charge you $200 for a approval stamp. Once all the forms clear they will call you local dealer and he can give the gun to you. It's actually pretty painless except the stamp fee.
Also some areas are harder to get a sign-off then others. One way around this is to create a trust in you name. The gun can be owned by the trust and carried by any trustee and does not require a LEO sign-off. You can make a simple trust with Quicken Will or have a lawyer draft one for you.
Enjoy-

Go to ATF.gov. A civilian can get a class III weapon (fully automatic, silencers, etc) assuming they are not disqualified by things like felonies and such. There is a form that has to be filled out and you need to get a signature from a Sheriff in your state (they are not required to sign so this may be the hard part). There is also a $200 fee for each item you wish to purchase. ATF.gov has all the details.

I'd honestly say join the military like reserves or the National Guard. They have all that good stuff just like the normal Active service branches. Plus with a good military background, in the civilian world, makes the checks involved in the paperwork go by alot faster. In which you can obtain your class3 liscence and your weapon faster with less hassle.
