Some people have a lot to say. Especially the elderly, who have many stories and experiences to share if they ever see value from telling them. Positively reinforce anything, and you're nearly sure to get more of that behavior. People who feel they have excessive knowledge or experience on a topic will also respond. Not to mention those who have a strong emotionally driven opinion on it. All in all, it's the topics who have emotionally driven motivating factors who get the longest and most profound answers.

Well then don't ask "How Are You"? If you ask and then don't want their answer, then you have asked out of hipocrisy and that is just plain rude... Just say Hi, nice to see you... and then off you go... Or ask about the news or something else ...

Or learn to ask Yes or No questions if you are the type of person that likes to control a conversation, just like lawyers do...

Every person you meet and greet has a message for you...

Some people enjoy hearing anecdotes and other people's experiences, other people don't. If they're friends, they should also know your preference, if they keep doing it when you never show any interest they're pretty insensitive. But on here, we don't know much about the Asker, and I've seen as many people who picked such answers as 'best' and enjoyed reading about someone who'd experienced something similar as people who, like you, went 'yawn' and gave thumbs-down to such replies. If you don't want to hear it, don't listen/read it... to each their own...

Which would be fine if the story was even remotely interesting. But seriously, I don't give a damn about Aunt Melanie's fight with Bobby Ray nor do I care about those bastard children of Karen. Take it up with Jerry Springer already.

Because when I was a little girl I lived in a very small town. so small it was classified as a village. A little villiage smack dab in the middle of New england. Times were differnt back then but even then we werent allowed to be outside when it was dark. We even had and 8o/clock bedtime! Oh how we would hate in the summer being up in our rooms while there was still daylight outside. But when summer vacation came we loved it. still we had to ride our bikes in the tiny driveway....our street would alway sflood when it rained...we would go outside and play in the streets when it was blocked off because of flooding......what a wonderful time we had....when it would thunder and lightning out we would sit on our front porch....and watch.....it was sooo exciting....especially when the wind picked up.....it would blow hugre plants from our maple trees. I love the maple trees becausein the winter.spring there would be icicles on the tree and we'd pick them off and eat them because they were sweet from the sap.we'd always sneak up on the roof especially when summer came....but back to trees we had the most beautiful lilac tree in our yard as well and I cant think of anything sweeter than the smell of lilac wafting in my bedroom window in the summer morn......But ANYWAYS.....to answer your question....sometimes people like to share their expiereinces in hopes of helping or just because...

I know what you mean. What's worse is when someone then takes whatever you were talking about and turns it into a complete conversation about themselves not once asking about you. If at any time you try and bring it back to the original course you get a bored look, bringing it back to themselves. Try dealing with that.

Some answers only make sense if put in context and fully explained. Not every question can be answered with a soundbite.
