Well for starters, you need to go into the BIOS and set the CD-ROM as the boot drive. To do this you start up the computer and you need to press and hold whatever button is set to do this (usually delete). It will tell you which one it is, but you don't have much time to push it, so you might need to shut down and try again. Then you need to put the XP CD in the drive and start up the computer with it in there. The CD will boot up the computer and it should bring you to the Windows install screen where you follow the on screen instructions to erase the drive and install XP.

G'day,
If the Hard Drive is big enough, and the Processor is fast enough, you can install XP over 98, and when it's done, you will get an option to delete the old 98 files, or delete them. Once you Install XP, do a Check Disk For Errors, Defrag, Anti-Virus and Spyware Scan

get an excellent free anti virus with free updates at www.grisoft,com, look for the FREE version of AVG Anti Virus ... use google, search for SpyBot S&D Freeware Download, run that as well, I suggest you run them before you add any programs

Any laptop originally loaded with 98 is very unlikely to have the resources (cpu and ram) to support XP. Even if you manage to get it running the drivers will be difficult.
If the XP cd has been used elsewhere, it will probably refuse to activate, leaving you with a dead pc in 14 days.

I would format Drive C : This will erase all files currently on the disk.

Make note of the product key which should be on a sticker on the plastic case containing the WinXP CD. You will need it along the way and definitely the first time you bring up WinXP. You will need to enter it to activate.

Go to this link and copy/paste whatever you need into a file. It is an excellent webpage which fully explains the installation process.

WindowsXP – Steps to a Clean Install

This is an excellent website which fully explains installing WindowsXP. Steps to a Clean Install are about halfway down the article.

Have your Product Key available, typical install is around 30 minutes. If setup seems to hang, wait at least 10 minutes + before restarting system. You should experience momentary screen blackouts.

I agree on WIN98 to XP, likely not a good choice.

A great compromise would be Windows 2000 or NT. Has many of the features (sort of like XP), and is quite stable on older laptops.

Nope. You will need the key that came with the XP kit.

Put the xp cd in the drive and let it do its thing. It will take care of it. But if you want a good, no worrys job done, take it to staples or futureshop and have them reinstall. Staples does it for $50 and its worth it.
