I am traveling from DC to Philly to Barcelona to Valencia for a total of 16hrs and 20 minutes. I will be living with a host family in Valencia for two weeks while attending a school for Spanish language. I've never been in an airport, never been out of the country and I am traveling alone. I am proficent in Spanish, but not confident. Can anyone tell me what to expect on the flight (or what to do during a 5 hr layover in Philly), airport procedures, what to expect in Valencia, any tips for traveling or conversing with the people I encounter? Anything really.

I've been to Valencia many years ago. One thing that hasn't changed. It's hot. Be prepared for that and bring only clothes for extremely hot weather at least in Valencia. When traveling you encounter cold weather(night, plane is overly air-conditioned,high elevation) that requires a jacket. I would get a jacket with lots of pockets with zippers that you could almost wear in hot weather, too. The convenience of having everything on you makes up for the weight. You'll be waiting around for along time and a pencil and log is a good way to use up your time recording it. Plus people are more likely to approach you when you are appearing to be doing something useful. If you are a woman I would consider wearing a wedding ring.I'm a man and I don't personally know how useful that is but I'm sure you'll figure it out. In General, think of Spain as a physically uncomfortable place that requires a little bit of planning to get through the day in a cool, hygienic way. Hat,wetable bandana, sunglasses, clothes that don't show dirt as well (gray, brown)something to cut the B.O. smell. Eat alot of plain, unsweetened yogurt, too. They make them good in Europe and it keeps you from getting diarrhoea.
