Probably from the way you was bought up. White people in
the older days were very racist for some reason. The times
are changing but sadly there are still people like that out there.
The black people on the other case, won't let it rest. They just
never going to forgive and forget the past no matter what. And
people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpen not helping. They
are constantly after a white person but will prtect a black if the
table was turned.

Closemindedness and the lack of diversion growing up. I grew up without any blacks around and my dad had a grudge toward blacks. Therefore I had the same mindset until I joined the military and worked with so many different people on a daily basis and having to put my life in the hands of others constantly.
Also, people who have bad experiences with other races can be susceptible to becoming racist. Just look at the people who turn their backs on God because something bad happened to them.
Mostly I would say closedmindedness and people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the ACLU.

I guess I could give you my opinion, however, it's best to define the terms first. When you say, "What drives people to be racist?" that can mean a lot of different things.
That is because the term racist is such a politicalized word it's impossible to know precisely what context and frame of reference your question springs from. That is to say, in a political context, for example, when caucasions might show favoritism toward their own race without malice toward another, it is called racial discrimination, nevertheless. Yet, conversly, when blacks do that it is "brotherhood." Then you might have "racism" in a context of something like Nazi skin heads, which is a completely different presupposition behind the word.
Overall, I think it's a word we need to move away from in public discourse because its origin is from Trostsky and designed to be a politicized word to create tension in society.
So, if you have a specific concept that you are wanting opinions on it might be good to be more specific in your question.

Ignorance and fear, plain and simple. People fear what they do not understand.
I have seen it several time where someone who was a racist meets someone and is completely blown away that, despite color or race, that person is just like us! You mean black guys have the same feelings as us? Say it ain't so! Mexicans are coming into the country to get jobs to help their families? Fiends!
Ignorance & fear.

well my guess would be, stupidity. To even say, i dont like someone because they are a different color, or orientation makes as about as much sense as saying, i dont like your car because its purple.........Burn a cross in its garage!!!..........
the real question is why are we still strugling as a society over the dumb stuff. Kids are starving, education is failing, government is taking advantage of its people. But we as a society are still stuck on color and orientation. If your black, so what, im white..... if your gay, im straight........I wont judge for what you are.....but i will rate you for what you do......

Some people are Pure Racists, others who simply speak the truth, and are backed up by the facts, are considered racist when they are only trying to help.
