My fiancee and I are atheist and we were wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make the ceremony our own without a priest or pastor. We already decided on having the ceremony in a nature like environment. Any suggestions?

My husband and I are agnostic & athiests. We hired a professional officiant to do a ceremony for us. She helped us create a ceremony that had no reliegious bits and suited what we wanted. We had lovely poems and words of wisdom.
You should be able to find someone locally that can do this for you. It makes a much nicer ceremony than just a justice of the peace. We got a LOT of compliments on how nice the ceremony was.

Oh, and about the previous poster saying it's a religious thing and you shouldn't get married is completely out of their head. Marraige is a celebration of the union of two people to each other.

Good luck and congratulations!

If you look around you should be able to find secular officiants that can come out and marry you. When we were planning our wedding, we lokked into this, and we found a woman in the area that did this, and it was way cheaper than paying a pastor. Try checking with local freethought and humanist organizations, that's how I found this person. You could also check with your local justice of the peace/clerk of the peace, you may be able to arrange for a judge or other local government official to come to your location and perform the ceremony. There are many secular options for getting married. Good luck!

Hi, Some of these people are being extremely negative. That make me sad.

My fiance and I are doing the same thing, What we have done since getting married in a church or chapel is not an option, We are getting married next to a river on this Beautiful walk way filled with waterfalls and fountains. Its nice, We are having a Justice of the Peace come to Marry us in front of about 30 people.

We just went to the Courthouse and they reccommended a Non demoniational Justice to do the job. It was very simple. Good Luck And Congrats!

Depending on which state you live in, different people are licenced by the state to perform a wedding. I got married in Rhode Island and there, you can get a Clerk of the Courts to do it but LIS each state is different. You find out about your state and call up the appropriate person and tell them what you want to do. They know the rest.

Our clerk even wanted to insert some kind of ecumenical prayer but we had to insist that he not do it. He still came up with some nice words to use. We had our wedding ceremony in a nice little inn, where we had the reception. My brother and sister in law had their wedding out on a sandy cliff on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. They got some local official out there to do the ceremony.

I might also suggest that you check out a Unitarian Universalist minister. Yeah, it's a minister but they perform humanist/atheist ceremonies for people, too, and you don't have to be a member. They are really good about helping you find the right words and stuff like that.

Oh, and - congratulations!

i'm with Rachel's answer. you should be waiting to have a dissenting opinion without all of us getting offended. in the event that they do get offended it relatively is in all probability a difficulty they have with their very very own faith. I propose i've got seen some solutions on R&S that i could stay faraway from (i.e., Rachel's sky daddy remark, or the "I take care of christians like toddlers becuase they have shown that they might't reason, etc). the suited words: you have had an adventure meaning something to you. i will savor that. I even have not had this adventure. i'm no longer able to tension it. i'm no longer able to make myself have faith. subsequently it is what i've got faith. it is for sure does not substitute your ideals, yet i'm hoping you may comprehend why i've got faith the way I do. something like that in step with probability.

I think you could just go to the courthouse and go in front of a judge to make it legally binding, but then have an unofficial ceremony after that where you invite family and friends and do it any way you like.

You would have an officiant marry you.

Or you could get a friend to become ordained (http://www.ulc.net), but check your ceremony location just in case they have an issue with being ordained that way.

You would just get a jp, or judge, or marriage commissioner - whatever the civil officiant is called in your area.
