How can I best preserve/sterilize things such as feathers, pieces of twig/bark etc

You don't need to do anything about those you mentioned. They are not perishable even though they are natural products. Just make sure they are and keep dry. Not that it will go bad but feathers can bleach in damp and 'sunny' circumstances.

If you wanted to use 'fresh' flowers you would need to set them in glycerin for a day or two. Fresh meat you can only simulate as it will never hold. Bugs, butterflies and the likes, just dry and use....did I leave anything out?
