People will say religion is lies, or there is no truth, or God isn't real because there's no proof, or many other ridiculous reasons that prove nothing about the falsehood of any religion. The truth is no one knows 100% absolutely that what they believe is true. EVERY belief including athiests/evolutionists, new age philosophy, unitarians, etc... base their beliefs on faith. To say there is no God is faith based, they can't prove it but they believe it - that's faith. To say there is no absolute truth is faith based, again can't prove it but people believe it. To say every way is a way to get to God is also based on faith, maybe there is only one way to God, who knows?. The only possible exception is agnosticism which basically says "I don't know". But if that is taken any further and stated as "No one knows or ever knew" - that type of agnosticism is based on faith as well, you can't prove that no one in all of history hasn't known the answers to the mystery behind life - again you can't prove that that person has never existed. So how do you know what to put your faith in? Well first know that chances are you are putting some amount of faith in some belief. From there you have to begin to ask God daily if he is real to reveal his true self to you. Let's say you get no response (I believe you will get a response as long as you keep your mind prepared for him to speak to you in anyway), but then you could infer that he is either a God that doesn't care about people, or he is not powerful enough to speak directly to you, or that there is no God at all. But if you do begin to get some sort of response then you have to look into what religions say about God. This is where it requires a lot of digging. Begin to look into different "Holy Books" (Bible, Book of Mormon, The Quran etc...). Read literature about different religions. Read different books from authors of different beliefs regarding theology. See first where God may be leading you and then see if what religions add up the most scientifically and historically. Which doctrines make the most sense as far as how we should live our lives? Basically it's two things; searching for God spiritually (asking him to reveal himelf to you) and searching for him scientifically (looking for historical and even moreso scientific evidence and seeing where that leads you). Probably the most important thing to do through all of this is to ask God to reveal himself to you continually. Because if there is a God, he probably created us. If he created us then it would only make sense he had a reason fo doing so. One very plausible reason would be for Him to communicate with us, seeing as how he made relationship/communication probably the most important part of anyone's life.
I personally believe that christianity and the Bible add up as far as history and science go and make the most sense regarding setting guidelines for life. If you do look into religious reading at all check out "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis. Logically brilliant, geniously well thought out book about why christianity adds up no matter how you look at it. Don't stop there though, look into all different kinds of religious writings and see what adds up to the best of your knowledge.

Why do you believe in god?
Gods were originally invented to answer the big imponderable questions, where did we come from? Why are we here? What happens after we die?
The most popular religions give the most popular answers, with extra credit for those religions that claim exclusivity to the best after-death resorts.
As science has progressed we can now see that much of what all the religions originally claimed is utter rubbish, and the smarter religions have changed to adapt. Holy books are now allegorical rather than literal.
Still science has not answer the big questions fully. (Or we do not really like the answers) So God remains in the gaps that science has not addressed. But is that any reason to believe that god is really there? Those gaps get smaller every day, why do they need to be filled with god? Why is the answer "We do not know. (Yet)" not acceptable?
The one question that science has already answered is: Why are we here? Unfortunately the answer - That certain chemicals reacted together to form chemicals that were capable of forming near-perfect copies of themselves. - is not very emotionally satisfying. That does not stop it from being the reality though.

If there are two doors in a room and each has a sign on it that says, Great Fortune behind this door, and only one is true, how do you tell which one is true? By opening the door and finding out. With religion, while you can't come back from the dead, it is a good thing to check out the evidence for the religions that you think are right so that you have a better shot at choosing the right one.
I believe in Christianity, not because I think its the most popular religion, but rather I am persuaded by the evidence of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ that He is who He said He is and that Christianity is true.
What you have to do, is to check them out...

One way is to observe and/or see if they (their doctrine, way of life, belief systems, practices, etc.) produce what you believe to be "good fruit."
Almost ALL 'religious doctrines' admonish their followers to treat others well. Just observe how they treat others--especially those who are NOT of "their own kind"--especially after someone has rejected their doctrine. ;-)
Remember the Master stated that we needed to know the truth and the truth would set you free--he did NOT say that finding the right/true religion would set you free, eh?
Do you even think that finding the true church IS possible--or if possible, even an 'easy thing' to do? If it was then everyone would not be 'seeking'; and/or when they believed they found what they were looking for, they would not be impressed to look further, right?
How is it that you have come to believe that you would know "truth" (the true church, the true god, etc.) if it was a 16 ton weight that fell out of the sky and landed right on top of your head?
How do you discern whether a thing is true or not? By listening to what others say is 'true'?

Never let anyone tell you what religion is the right one because anyone who deminishes God by limiting how we can believe in Him, is not a person of God.
Finding God within you and living a good life as a good human being should be be exclusive to one religion. There are good and evil people in each and every religion. It's how we apply being a good person to our lives and the lives of the ones we touch is true belief.
I don't go to church, but consider myself a much more spiritual person than:
**The BTK serial killer was a president of his church and a very vocal "christian".
**The head of the evangelical association of the United states was saying how evil homosexuals are and then violating young boys while deceiving his wife.
**Foley beat his chest about toughening preditor laws of this country while he was imposing himself sexually on underaged boys under his employment.
The list can go ON and ON...
Be a good person and live with dignity and you'll be just fine here on earth and in the eyes of God, no matter what religion you're labeled under. ;o)

Hmm I just answered this for someone else. :)
Truth is relative. Belief is what makes its real. There is no one true anything. Its what speaks to your soul and makes you feel good, even if its no belief at all. You have to find your own truth...and you know when you will. Don't follow any body's heart but your own.

You know, this was one of the first things I considered before I became agnostic. It's certainly not the only flaw of religion, but it is a baffling one. I would dare to say that they are all a bunch of crap.
----------------------------
Although, it is kind of interesting to read other people's answers, who believe their religion is the one true religion and then they try to convince you of it (especially after your said something like that). lol

the true church was started on the day of Pentecost as stated in the book of Acts, chapter 2 and has not changed the message that Peter preach on that day
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
