****** [níggər]
(plural *******)
noun (taboo)
1. a taboo term for a black person
2. a taboo term for a dark-skinned person

The term expresses that they are prohibited or rejected because they are socially unacceptable.

[Late 17th century. Via Spanish ***** from Latin niger ‘black’.]

Sensitivity:

This term is arguably the single most offensive racist slur in the English language. The fact that black people and other people of colour sometimes use this word in reference to themselves does not excuse its present-day use by members of other ethnic groups. Those who persist in using it should remember that their use of the word reflects directly upon them, the users. The terms of choice are black or black person and person of colour.

I feel that others like myself who are Black.
I am Black Cherokee with tons of white blood in myself feel that that particular hateful connotations not helpful at all to any group of peoples. Black people have been so fearful of the whites especially the white Europeans and what those people think. Think about why else would a class of people really get so riled if they didn't give a tinker's dam what the other group of people are saying about them. I am not saying it is cool. I am not saying that all whites are racist, nor am I saying that black people are for sure to sensitive about things that should matter not in the grand scheme of things, people.
White people all over the world started out as dark skinned at one point too.
I must point out the hypocrisy in black people telling everyone including myself that that word ****** doesn't bother or is acceptable to say but not for you. That is being a hyprocritic if you asked me( i am black remember that). That word only brings up memories in which we decide that other person that says it is racist. No" white" person has ever been truly deeply offended by the word "whitey" or" cracker" not when I have used them. It also does not have the same omff as the other word anyway...Nword has way more when it comes to getting dark skinned people riled up by that one little word-N*****

I must also put my other two cents while I am here white black red purple green yellow blue whatever colour you are it doesn't matter. We seem to hypocritical with everyone when we get riled up by words like this but turn around and ask for help from that same person we insulted or that person insults you an has the nerve to think you will look the other way and help them anyway. Yet it all comes down to human nature what we do what we accept what type of energy we all invest in.

I hate the word, yet when I say that I know I am saying I fear that word. Fear is the key element in eleminating power from the words we say and concentrate on healing each other with less talk and more gestures of kindness.

Instead of hating the word or calling someone racist when they use words like the Nword try to explain to them how it makes you feel inside and about being with someone that would be so calluse as to use such an offensive terminalogy in your presence.

Have a very good day all, and remember the only stupid question is the one never asked!

Well because the word has a negative history. It was used to segregate and devalue a people. It was used during the enslavement era. People were not regarded as human beings or as equals. The use of the word takes society a step backwards and simply perpetuates this negative and inhuman treatment. So due to what the word stood for, the dark history of this word stirs up feelings of anger. Black people (those of African-Americans or those of African descent) may be become angered when the word is used not only by those of outside of their race but those of the same race. To truly understand why their is anger towards the use of this word, one needs to know the history from which the word was derived.

Beacause it means just that when non blacks use it . its not a nice word to begin with if a black person says it to another black person it could be meaning lots of things. Its understood in the black community as slang we want our children to stop using it. if you are angry when you say it that's what it means., if you are happy when you use it is just there for a lack of a better word. its very complicated but in general use its not said to hurt someone if a white person says it just out of the blue its fighting words meaning whats your point. its used to make a point its even used brotherly towards some in the community. its a very ugly word its offensive to some. American history should tell you why blacks get mad when white America made that word to identify a person as a lower person that's what it meant to them now it means something else kinda like positive thinking so when you hear someone like Imus use it in the context that he did its offensive. I don't think it can really be explained because it has so many meanings its a very personal word having a different meaning from each individual if you don't understand it you should not use it if you use it use it in the correct context if you know one. There are not very many. For some blacks its just habitual to use it. mostly not to hurt, kinda like explaining a life style,.implimenting that maybe that person is lazy or just taking advantage of a situation. There is so much about it _itsjust unexplanable .point blank its just an ugly word, but its in the dictionary and it can be applied to anyone in the right context. Like I said its a very, ugly ,personal word and it identifys the person that uses it personality.and beliefs.

Because it is considered highly offensive to them...I dont blame em...White people used it way back when blacks were still classified as slaves.. it ment like they were lazy and not human..so I heard... and yes people still use it today because there RACIST you really shouldnt use it unless you want your a** kicked... I think people should get fined or something for using if heard on the street because its a pretty powerful word...My feelings would be crushed if somebody used it against me soo therefore I dont use it ...

I'm white so I can't give a personal perspective answer, but I can tell you my belief. I think it has to do with slavery and how whites used to refer to blacks. In general, they were not our equal and the term is degrading and indicates a person who is not your equal. The bottom line though is it's just a name. Just like any other name that is used out of hate. It's wrong and should never be used. I wish the black race would send a strong message not just to "whites" regarding the use of ******, but to blacks especially. Why is it OK for black comedians to use it regularly? It should not be tolerated by any person....period.

Because the n-word was used by white slave owners to dehumanize their "property". Therefore, when this word is used by a white person today it brings up an emotional response. It is not anything anyone whose family/friends have NOT been enslaved and dehumanized would ever understand. So, it's best to avoid this nasty word all together.

I do think it is hypocritical when people call themselves or their friends the n-word, but this hypocricy in itself does not give ANYONE the right to use this.

I don't know maybe it had something to do with the whole cival war and the fact that the term ****** was something slave owners used. ****** is a term that is deragatory and has hundreds of years of pent up aggression, and it is something that you just don't do. Now understand that there is a difference between ****** and *****. ***** is an ebonics word that usually means friend. But you do not use the slang unless you are friends and have been invited to use the word with your friend.
