From the 1985 movie, "Creator" starring Peter O'Toole as Dr. Harry Wolper:

--------------------------

Boris: Harry, how did you know you were in love? I mean with you and Lucy. How'd you know it wasn't just infatuation?

Dr Harry Wolper: Scientifically, of COURSE. By using The Love Formula.

Boris: The what?

Dr Harry Wolper: Love Formula. Add up the number of times that you think about the lady each day. Subtract from the total the number of times you think about yourself each day. If the remainder is more lady, and less yourself, then it's love.

Boris: Oh, I've been thinking about Barbara a lot lately.

Dr Harry Wolper: What's so very neat about this particular formula, is that "a lot" plugs into it beautifully. Boris, would you and the subject of your computations care to join me at the beach house for the weekend?

Perhaps being "in love" and loving someone are two different things.

Loving someone means putting his or her needs and feelings before your own (within reason), and you are willing to sacrifice your time, energy, and ego for the other person's happiness. The best example is probably a mother's love for her children.

Being "in love" can involve more romantic notions which usually have strong expectations. That's why some may call it infatuation.

You have to remember that there is a difference between lust and love. Lust can feel like you are in love but really you are just kidding your self. You will know when you are in love. It is this great and some times annoying feeling. You will feel like you cant stop thinking about that person and you always want to be with them. And when you are with that person it is like nothing else in the world matters.
Hope this helps : )

like 'min77ion' said...when you don't need to ask that question...
when you want to spend every free moment away from work or whatever with this person...
when you feel comfortable around them and you trust them.
also, you feel comfortable enough with this person to spend time away from them.
obsessing with someone and thinking about them constantly is just infatuation.
anyway, there are also no silly dramas or mind games going on.
when every problem that you once thought was big is meaningless when you spend time with this person.
and when you can live in the same house for a year without driving each other insane.
thats what i'd say it is. but heck, there are a gazillion things.
as i said, lots of people confuse love with infatuation. if you feel the need to spend every second of your life thinking about them...thats just stupid. who thinks about music, or books, or the tv, every second of their life? only the ones who are obsessed or infatuated by the lure of these things.
real love is exactly as that annoying quote from the bible says, really. the one that most weddings have.

If you have to ask you are not in love.

You will know when it happens, or should I say every time it happens.

You will go thru various phases of this thing called and known as love.

falling in love is a misconception that it is love or at least one of the manifestations of love.

the temporary collapse of ego boundaries that constitutes falling in love is a stereotypic response of human beings to a configuration of internal sexual drives and external sexual stimuli, which serves to increase the probobility of sexual pairing so as to enhance the survival of the species.

You want to spend most of your time with the person. Every chance you get, you want to be on the phone with the person, and you think there the best person on earth. When they are not with you, you are thinking about them. You are trying to make arrangements to see them again.

When you absolutely can't stand to be without them. They are always on your mind when they are away from you. When you would give up anything just to make them happy. Just make sure the feeling is mutual.
