Understudies usually perform 2 shows a week or so and I often find that they are just as good or better than the main cast, so don't be too disappointed if you do see an understudy perform. Usually the program has an insert stating which roles are being played by whom if there are any changes to whats printed in the program. They will not tell you ahead of time. If you know someone in the cast, they can tell you if there's a fairly regular schedule that the lead and understudy have for a particular role.

The Matinee just means that it is done in the afternoon. It should be the original cast unless there is a notice at the MArquee. They will also sometimes announce from the stage if there is a last minute substitution. If you call the box office on the day of the performance, they should be able to give you assurances as to who is performing.

are you seeing the play or the movie?
The musical opened at Her Majesty's Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles and there have been more than twenty productions worldwide since then.
They don't use understudies unless the regular actor/actress is sick.
here is the link for the show to see who tha cast is if your seeing the broadway or vegas production

anytime understudies are in a performance, it's announced at the beginning of the show...chances are, you will be seeing whomever the leads are...being a matinee or evening show has nothing to do with it; understudies can be used at either one..enjoy the show...personally, I hated it!!
