My school has a celebration called May Festivel (simialr to homecoming) and its tradition to have a May Festivel Talent Competition. I have a pretty big voice but i am an alto and its hard for me to find songs that can show my power but not exceed my range. Does anybody have an suggestions as to what to perform, how to perform, and how to stand out against kids much older (and probably better) than me. Thank you so much, your help is greatly appreciated..

p.s. I am in 9th grade and I am competeting against all grades up to 12th.

p.s.s I need songs appropriate for little kids and parents!!

thx

As far as repertoire, look to Gershwin.

Someone to Watch Over Me
I Got Rhythm

Another fun song if you can find it is:
If We Hold On Together - from Land Before Time, Diana Ross

There are so many more, but these are great classic songs easy on the ear for children and adults alike. They also are not that difficult, and are cute!

As far as performing, be yourself but give yourself a character. When you are on stage, you are your character. If you mess up, keep going. Make sure you stand tall and entertain that audience of yours. Use your face for expression, but don't let it interfere with your singing. If you get nervous, focus on your breathing!

Look for classic american popular song - Rosemary Cluny is a good singer to listen to. As are the Mills Brothers, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee and a host of others.

Ask your grandparents for suggestions.

The nice thing about the classics is that their lyrics are appropriate for all ages.

When searching for songs within your range, go to StageAgent.com and do a search there. You find a number of roles & shows appropriate for your range and choose a song from those! Finding something that those 12th graders never thought of would be great, hmmm? :-)

It would be wonderful if you knew someone who played piano You could sing in a key that was comfortable for you. Sing without the CD so, you can show off your stuff.
What type of music are you singing...Hip Hop, R&B, Gospel ? Chose a song that really shows off your voice.

The key is to sing something classy and unique, and that highlights your good qualities. Maybe you can get something from a play like Bye Bye Birdie or High School Musical or something like that
